Being a music fan since the early 1970's I have always been drawn to those artists who were not afraid to create music from a personal and introspective place. Nanci is an artist that caught my attention in 1984 when a live performance of "Daddy Said" from the "Once in a Very Blue Moon" album was in rotation on CMT at the time. I was in my mid 20's and that song captured my attention enough to make me seek out her previous releases. I was hooked from that moment on and I had to have every single album until her final release of "Intersection" in 2012. I was fortunate to see Nanci live on multiple occasions over the years. I am in my mid 60's now and to this day, Nanci is the only person, I have witnessed live, perform with so much love, emotion and magic bringing many in her audience to tears. In Birmingham, Alabama on a unusually cool breeze filled night on June 1, 2002 accompanied by both her Blue Moon Orchestra and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra she held the audience in the palm of her hand. She sent everyone there to a magical place where for almost two hours we inhabited the places and feelings she so often had written of in her songs. I left Caldwell Park that evening with a tinge of remorse after experiencing something rare and beautiful. I continue to listen to Nanci's music often because for me it is almost spiritual. If I hear music when I pass from this world to the next, I hope it will be Nanci Griffith singing The Wing and the Wheel sending me to catch my own Outbound Plane towards home.

Condolences to Nanci's family, friends and fans. There was always something in Nanci's voice, her songs, and her Spirit. When I hear her songs, something inside hurts--in a good way...in an elegiac way. Real music for a lifetime. If it is at all possible, if it is true, then she is singing with a band of angels, even as I write this. Thank you Nanci.

It was heartbreaking to learn today of Nanci’s passing last month. Her unique singing style was a delight. While it would have been magical to hear her play at Anderson Fair, it was a great privilege to see her perform at Royal Albert Hall in London in 2001. RIP and may your angelic voice be shared with the next generation to cherish as we all did.

I first heard Nanci on the radio on an early morning talk show. She had just released One Fair Summer Evening and they were playing songs off the album in-between talking with her. I immediately fell in love with her music. My first chance to see her live was at The Bottom Line in NYC on Sept. 17, 1989. I took the cover of the Storms CD with me and between the first and second set I asked a stage hand if he could take it back to be signed. Over the years I had the pleasure of seeing her in concert another 10 times, including the Newport Folk Festival, Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and so many others. I have a framed picture hanging in my den with most of the ticket stubs from these concerts .... and the signed CD cover. Her music has been, and always will be, a big part of my love. Rest in peace Nanci.

Leaving something to say, in such forums, about someone who mattered in your life is difficult to do. For one thing, it ought to be short, yet heartfelt. The other is I really didn't know Nanci Griffith. But still, I, as many of her fans, likely all, did know her. They knew she was talented and full of life. Her women fans wanted to befriend or be like her and her male fans, secretly or not, wanted to romance her. I know I did. I did not only because she was a talent but understatedly pretty, adorable, genuine, modestly humble and simultaneously vulnerable. Those who leave a comment here are offered to choose a relationship with the deceased. Out of curiosity, I had to see if "fan" was available. It wasn't. But other relationships that could "fit the bill" for me, in my mind, were present: acquaintance, student, neighbor and friend. Thank you Nanci for becoming, over time, all four of those to me despite we'd never met, never played guitar together, or shared the same vicinage. Those relationships evolved because of your music - and as a result of that - your friendship.

We have lost to this world a voice, heart and soul that provides a balm of healing and meaning in the soundtrack of our complex emotional lives. Her music helped me grow up and reach the parts of the heart in joy, loss and celebration that made this life adventurous and worthwhile. Words fail, but Nanci may your gentle soul rest in peace, may the Angels lead you to Paradise, may the smiles of the martyrs come to greet you, where Lazarus is poor no longer, may you have eternal rest. May your music live on until we all enjoy the company of each other. to your family and intimate ones, my sympathy, love and prayers. Thank you for making the world more beautiful and being a changemaker of joy

First time I heard Nanci, I was hooked. Such a special talent, and more than that, her sweetness shown through her lyrics whether they were her own or Other Voices. I saw her with the Chieftains in Jones Beach and since that concert, I tried to see her every time I could. I still have my tickets for the concert she had to cancel in Carnegie. The most memorable was the Blue Note. That was her milieu....intimate and closely connected to the audience. I will miss the music she would have continued to make, and always treasure the music she made, the stories she told, and the sweetness of her voice that reflected her character. I pray that she was surrounded by angels of the Lord when she passed from this world to the light beyond these woods. May you rest in peace, sweet Nanci! Thank you for all you gave to this world.

My heartfelt condolences are offered to the family, many, many friends, colleagues and devoted army fans of Nanci Griffith. Nanci was a folk and country music singer and songwriter for her hit song "Love at the Five and Dime." She was greatly admired by her fellow artists and all those who knew her. May the love and many, many special memories you shared with your devoted loved one show how much your life was touched by her. May the God of comfort bless your grieving hearts with strength, loving kindness and peace as the world copes with the loss of Nanci Griffith. May her music and legacy keep her memory alive forever.

Never had a reaction to the passing of a musical performer like I had when I read of Nanci's passing. Just sat there in my livingroom and cried. Nanci held a special place in my heart and was such an inspiration to check out many folk music performers that I never would have known of. She was a great teacher. Saw her many times when she played up here in New England. Nanci's voice was angelic, just the right amount of twang mixed with the perfect amount of little girl lilt and innocence. I loved her dearly and will miss her. "Just once, in a Very Blue Moon.... does someone like Nanci Griffith come along. Sing loud with the rest of the Angel's my friend.

Nanci, you were my best friend from the age of 13 until now at 44. I knew all your songs by heart and knew that you knew me too. With your music, you came into my broken home and my broken heart and you sang over me and around me and inside me. I thank God for your heart. You were kind and honest with us. You were willing to trust us with your own broken heart. Thank you so much for caring about us the way you did. I wish I could give you a hug and say goodbye. I love you very much. God bless you, dear Nanci.

So much talent, such a special and gifted artist.
I was trying to think of a favorite song but that is so hard to do - there are so many! I do really love "There's a Light Beyond these Woods Mary Margaret." So very few songwriters have ever written a song about their childhood friend and you so eloquently wrote this song for your friend you met when you were 10. You were a great musician, singer & songwriter. I only had the opportunity to see you once in concert at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, California.
RIP Nanci Griffith.
