Muriel Diamond Obituary

Diamond, Muriel D. Bach (1918-2012). May 16th, marked the final curtain call for brilliant character actress, our beloved Muriel Bach Diamond. With our greatest love and admiration we celebrate her daring and meaning filled life, her endless curiosity and humor, and her commitment to seeing the growth opportunity present within all challenges. Daughter of Deborah and Gabriel Dunkleman, Muriel was born in Chicago on May 14, 1918, and was named after her maternal grandfather, Mendel. Muriel attended Carleton College and graduated from Northwestern University School of Speech in 1939. She was wed to Joseph Wolfson in 1940 and divorced in 1961. In 1962 Muriel and Ira J. Bach were married in Chicago and shared a marriage deep in mutual love and respect until his death in 1985. Muriel married Josef Diamond in 1987 and settled with him in his native Seattle where they enjoyed many wonderful years together until his death in 2007. She and Don Payette were married in September 2011. Muriel's beloved daughter, Susan Wolfson Mae, preceded her in death in 2002. Muriel is survived by her loving grandson, William Gabriel Mae; her brother, Marshall Dunkleman and his wife, Yvonne; her nephew, David Dunkleman and niece, Sharon Frank; loving step-son, John Bach and his wife, Beryl; step-daughter, Caroline Bach Marandos; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also celebrating her life are many treasured friends and hundreds of audience members throughout the United States. As expressed in the obituary of one Muriel's most respected characters, Eleanor Roosevelt, Muriel too, would rather "light a candle than curse the darkness". Graveside services, Wednesday May 23, at 1:00PM, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 9900 Gross Point Rd., Skokie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Treehouse, 2100 24th Ave. S, Suite 200, Seattle, WA 98144. Inf. Piser Funeral Services, 847-679-4740.

Muriel came into my life late in her life. She lit up the room with her liveliness and generosity. She coached me to better public speaking and contributed her energy and passion to help foster children. I am so grateful to have known her.

Muriel took me to my first play when I was a very young girl in Chicago. She and my Mother were first cousins. I have always admired Muriel and her parents. So happy I was able to visit her two years ago, and she was as elegant as ever.
May she rest in peace.

Muriel was my favorite relative. Her zest for life, enthusiasm, theatre savvy, great listening skills and compassion made her a wonderful human being. We are all richer for knowing her. May her memory be a blessing.

Muriel hired me to write some of her plays years ago and we became close friends. She was a spectacular actress and writer and I cherished her warmth, kindness, humor, graciousness - and there will never be enough words to capture her. I dearly loved her and will always miss her.

Muriel was my step-aunt. She entered my family when she married my uncle, the widower of my father's sister who had died at 51, leaving two children. Not only was Muriel a warm and loving wife to Ira Bach and a supportive step-mother for John and Callie, but she also reached out to the rest of the family. This included my grandmother, who had lost two of her four children within a year and who lived until she was nearly 100. Later after she had married Josef Diamond and moved to Seattle, Muriel generously offered to house my daughter sight unseen while she was looking for a job and a place to live. They became friends.

My most recent contact with Muriel came in Seattle on trips to visit my daughter and some friends on Bainbridge Island. Each time, I contacted Muriel and we had lunch or I went to her house. In 2000, when my daughter graduated from Bastyr University, Muriel invited the extended family, including my ex-husband and his 90 year old mother, to come to lunch and to swim at her house on Lake Washington. She welcomed us without judgment. Her grace, beauty honesty, and open-mindedness will long be missed.

An overwhelming sadness fills my heart to know that we have all lost such an amazing, gifted friend. An artist herself, she believed in me and my talent and gifted me the money to record my CD. I was Josef Diamond's personal assistant for 16 years, but was treated like a family member. I will always cherish her friendship and her love of the arts and life. God speed, Muriel.
