I have memories in my pocket.

They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole

They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

May 3, 2006

If you continue to grow on us like you have, you'll no longer be "Little" Mike.

Clearly, your profound effects on our lives grow wider and deeper as we more fully understand and appreciate the true nature of this crazy thing called "life".

Too many people never get -- or give -- much love in their lives. You did a lot of both, and got the rest of us to pay a bit more attention to that sort of thing.

Thanks also for your poignant reminder: whether its time, money, whatever, it's not how much we got but rather what we do with it. Your making the best of yours challenges us to try hard(er) to do the same.

Happy birthday, Mikey!

I know Aunt Moi had a great party for you in heaven, and everybody was there. Your grandpa, Pat Flaherty, everybody sang to you. We were singing to you down here, too. We miss you so much, but we feel your presence daily. I keep your picture on my dresser and see your smiling face every morning.

Love and misses,

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

A day does not pass that I dont think of you and Michael. I never could have imagined how much love and joy that Michael brought into my life each day when I walked into our classroom. I miss how he would run to me to say hi everyday hitting me in that perfect spot that made me grab something to hold my balance. I hold on to that smile that I can so easily picture in my mind.

Mike, Lynda, Jocelyn & Audra -

Like little Mike, the rest of us are still with you -- sending love and support as you work through the smiles and tears that even happy memories bring.

One of the great ironies of life is that we appreciate least what we have and best that which we have no longer.

It is a small consolation that Mikee's brief flight through our lives makes us all the more grateful to those who remain close to us, in body and/or in spirit.

As in all of life's adversities, there is no greater challege than to keep going, but no greater wish would he have for you & us: to do for others what was done so generously for him.

Mike, Linda, Jocelyn, and Audra,

You'll always be in our thoughts and prayers. Words cannot express our gratitude for the memories you have given us over the years, and the fun times we experienced through a common love of softball. You were always like a second family for Megan during those long travels and trips. We will miss our little fan dearly, and we offer you all the love and support that you may need.

Can it be only a month that little Mikey left us? Time has crept by so slowly - and yet too fast. I see him all the time, in the faces of other 2 year olds, especially if they have red hair. Thank you so much for opening up your hearts and minds to us, because that's been our lifeline in coping with his loss. A woman came up to me at the children's Xmas concert at church yesterday and said, "I heard about little Mike...I'm so sorry..." His fame has spread far and wide. He did much in his short time on earth. May we all live such perfect lives.

All my love,

Omar,

I can just picture your son watching over you, so proud of how strong you have been. Smiling every time you tell stories of him, and reaching out to you every time the unbearable pain comes. Find comfort through him, Michael will always be with you. I know there is nothing I can say or do that will bring any peace to you, cause only time will help heal your soul, but please remember that I will always be here for you. Love you.

Dear lil' Mikey,

Your mom once told me (about 2 dozen times) that you were "the best thing she had ever done in her entire life". I'd never heard a mom say that before. Even when her eyes were tired, they sparkled when she talked about you. How lovely she was when she bragged about her 'red-head'.

I have never seen a kid laugh out loud like you!! What a great life she gave you. She worked hard to love you and keep you safe, we all know. She misses you.

Jocelyn, You are incredible. Your passion and strength is amazing. I don't know anyone else in the world like you. Please keep smiling.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury,pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Jocelyn,

I am so sorry that I was not able to come into town to see you last week but I was definitley there in spirit. My dad said that you were in fact doing quite well, and I was so happy to hear that. I think about little Mikey up there, and I can't think of anything better than the sight of Moi and Mikey, "our two redheads" as my dad likes to say, having a grand ole time. You have been a wonderful inspiration to all of us, and a great example of faith and endurance as well. My prayers are with you, and I love you so much.

Dear Jocelyn,Lynda Michael and Audra,

I have thought about what to say to you since I had heard about little Michael and I still do not know what to say.. Although what I experienced during the heartfelt celebration of Michaels life is that it may of been short, but it could not have been filled with any more love then you gave him and he gave back in return. He was a cherished child. Please try to keep those times in your heart and he will always be with you. I do not have any idea of the pain you are all feeling. It is beyond my comprehension. I just wanted to let you know you are in our hearts and in our minds always. And remember Michael has another godfather up in heaven also looking after him.

All our love,

Pam and Dennis

Prayers of the Faithful

We thank you Lord, for the lessons Michael taught us about LAUGHTER,

the power of a smiling face, a positive attitude

and the happiness that love brings into our lives;

We thank you Lord, for the lessons Michael taught us about POSSIBILITIES,

growing from past experiences,

finding magic in the present moment,

and discovering the hope we need to face the future;

We thank you Lord, for the lessons Michael taught us about HUMILITY,

reminding us to behave when we otherwise might not,

listen when we might rather talk,

and learn what we think we need to teach;

We thank you Lord, for the lessons Michael taught us about FORGIVENESS,

about turning the other cheek,

and not being the one to throw the first stone … or the second or third ones either;

We thank you Lord, for the lessons Michael taught us about COURAGE,

the importance of bouncing back,

and renewing our capacity to face the unknown

and the unexpected;

We thank you Lord, for the lessons Michael taught us about GRATITUDE,

appreciating the blessings each new life brings

as the most precious of God’s gifts;

We thank you Lord, for the lessons Michael taught us about STRENGTH,

that we may overcome the adversities

that often accompany life’s most wondrous joys …

We thank you Lord, for the lessons Michael taught us about ACCEPTANCE,

… of the Mysteries of Life beyond our comprehension

… of the Facts of Life that defy our understanding

… of the Meanings of Life that are yet to be revealed.

We thank you Lord, for the lessons Michael taught us about BOUNDARIES,

they’re not as big as they look,

they mark not our limits, but our capabilities.

May we not see them as walls, but as bridges.

We thank you Lord, for the lessons Michael’s life teaches us.

He reminds us that life is measured

not by how long it lasts, or what we achieve

but by how much we love and are loved.

Like a comet across the heavens, Michael is a shooting star

who leaves his bright and shining light to guide us.

Forever young, Michael will always live in our hearts.

Jocelyn baby, I've started this entry a dozen times and I've not been successful -- until now.

You know how much you mean to me and you know how much I love Michael. I don't even know where to begin, but I'll try.

Let me start with how terribly sad I am that our little Michael has left us on this level. I know that on another level, Moira, your Grandfather, my Dad (Ross) and many other of our family members have met him in Heaven and are taking care of him -- even spoiling him. Perhaps in my father's case, even fishing with him and teaching him the rules of football and hockey -- he always wanted a son.

Michael was one lucky little guy to have a loving mom like you. And you were very lucky to have the time you had with a great little guy like him. My, how he loved you and how you loved him. Thank you for letting me hold him, love him and kiss him all over when we were in Chicago. I am so very proud to be your aunt and Michael's aunt.

I'm sorry that the kids and I couldn't make it back to Chicago, but we sent Uncle David as our representative. I have heard from Uncle David that the service was amazing and that you not only showed grace under tremendous pressure, but that you were inspirational. I only wish that I could have been there to hug you, kiss you, and hold you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you from so far away. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Lynda, Mike and Audra, I love you. I'm sending you hugs and kisses, too.

love,

Aunt Diane, Kevin and Erin

Jocelyn, Lynda, Mike, & Audra,

I'm not sure exactly what to say. All I can do is tell you that I am inspired by your strength and have so much respect for you all. I feel what we have to look at is that Michael's life was not for himself, but he was God's instrument to teach us lessons in life that we are too old and bombarded with other things to even think about. He gave us a certain perspective on things we could not have gotten from anyone else. He is still teaching us even after his life on earth. I am truly greatful to your family for letting me be a part of your lives. I love you all and want you to know you have a great support system from all over.

Little Saint Michael has important work to do from heaven for all of you. Wait and see! Love, your neighbors, the Spaccarellis

With a splendor of color

Dropping leaves mark the season

Trees aren’t dying, they’re just changing

Only God knows the reason.

It’s by quality, not quantity

That a full life gets measured

It’s only real indication of value:

How much one is treasured.

By that token alone

Little Mike’s life is complete

His scoreboard-of-life tells

Of victory, not defeat.

How much is enough?

It’s not always our decision

Appreciating what we’ve got while we can

Requires some precision.

Not content to show the way

Young Mike now leads us there too

Leaving a path marked by love

That shows us what to do.

And so just as those trees

Will be reborn in the spring

Michael now lives on in our hearts

For him, our best we will bring.

Michael Tobin was one of the sweetest children you will ever meet. His smile just lit up his whole face. We at the Gottlieb Childcare Center were very lucky to have had Michael in our lives. My daughter, Sophia Rose was with him since they were a year old and loved that little boy so much. I know that she, as well as I, will greatly miss him. God bless his mother, aunt and grandparents - they loved him so much and may god have Michael in his glory.

Joc -- I'll never forget the call from your dad, letting us know about the biggest block party of the summer of '03: Michael's baptism party. And it was a blowout! We could hear the music a block away when we arrived that afternoon, and I think we were a few of the first to leave at midnight.

Thanks so much for bringing Michael into this world and for sharing him with all of us. He was a beautiful gift to your family, and now he's safe and happy with Moi and your grandfather Levatino... Can you imagine the trouble they're getting into up there? We love you! Marg, Shawn and Eddie
