Michael Nassar Obituary

Nassar, Michael N.

Mike Nassar of Edgewater died suddenly, March 4, 2021, at the age of 71. Mike was a United States Marine who served in Vietnam. He completed his B.A. in philosophy at Loyola where he would later take a job as evening supervisor at the Cudahy Library. He held this position for 44 years until his recent death. Mike loved Loyola, his co-workers, the faculty, and the many students with whom he worked daily.

Mike was a huge movie enthusiast. Prior to the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic he went to theaters regularly and kept an up-to-date (and enviable) collection of DVDs. Besides his beloved city of Chicago, he enjoyed the beaches on Cape Cod, Nauset in particular, and the Berkshire hills in western Massachusetts. One of his favorite past times was arguing with friends about the New England Patriots. He loved dogs and his parakeet.

Mike was predeceased by his mother, Hanora, in 1993. He leaves the Kerr family, Lisa and Jim of Ashfield, MA; James Daniel, Caitlin, Lila, and Madeline of Colorado; his godson, Evan William of St. Paul, MN; Irene "Nana" Kerr of Boston; Don Kelly and the Kelly family of Wilbraham, MA; a sister, Sue, of Arizona, and several nieces and nephews. Mike will be greatly missed by his entire Loyola Libraries family, especially members of his Access Services Department, including Avril De Bat and Tori Golden; his evening coworkers Faith Bennett and Mary Donnelly; Elise Aversa; and former colleagues and friends Karen Cherone and Penny Dimakos.

A burial service will be held at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, IL on Saturday, March 20 at 1:00 p.m. A virtual memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. CST. Please email [email protected] for the link and password to this memorial service. Memorial contributions on Mike's behalf may be made to the University Libraries Gift Fund at Loyola University of Chicago

I have known Mike for decades, as a colleague and friend. How I appreciated his wry humor, his kindness , which was unwavering!. Over my twenty five years, you can just imagine how many times I found myself at that library counter . He was generous and so sensible! For example, an important research volume that was necessary for the completion of an article I was ariting, had not yet been processed . He old me it was probably in the back on the carts... and he left the front and went back and actually found it for me. But it wasn't just his service! It was Mike himself!!. I feel taken aback to discover he has passed , passed so suddenly. I will miss him.
I am having three trees planted in the Holy Land, in his honor. If a member of the family will contact me, I will have that framed certificate sent to you. Please accept my sincerest sympathies. I'm sorry I cannot attend the funeral due to the virus, but I'll be there in heart and spirit with you all at the virtual service. We love you Mike. Pray for us! Love, Sister Wendy Cotter csj, Professor of New Testament (Emerita , 2016) , Loyola University, Chicago. [email protected]

Dear Family and Friend of Mike
I am saddened for Mike family and friends. Mike and I became friends while I was a student at Loyola in the late 70's . We had many an evening during his work breaks sharing dinner along the Lake banks of the campus. Over the years we stayed in touch whenever I was in Chicago. When my niece attended LU in 20087 I made sure she got to know Mike. Just thinking of Mike brings a smile to my face and I am very grateful to have had him as a friend. May he rest in peace. My prayers and thoughts are with his loved ones.

I knew Mike as a library patron. He was a fixture at the circulation counter. Mike made a contribution to the mission. He was a real character too. The library won't be the same without him.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mike. While I didn't know him, knowing that he worked at Cudahy Library makes me think we would have had a love of books in common. I thank him for his work at Loyola and his service to our country.
