Happy Birthday, Dad! You would have been 80 years old today. Tonight we are going to go to your favorite restaurant, Fox's Pizza, and listen to Irish music and remember the good times we had together. I know that wherever you are you will be with us to see how much you are loved and missed.
In a book called Life in the Balance by Dr. Thomas Graboys, who suffers from the same Parkinson's syndrome with Lewy body dementia that took you away from us, I found an old poem by Henry Scott-Holland, 1849-1918, Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, which I thought you would like.

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other
That we are still
Call me by my old familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way you always used
Put no difference into your tone
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed
At the little jokes we always enjoyed together
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
Without the ghost of a shadow in it
Life means all that it ever meant
It is the same as it ever was
There is absolute unbroken continuity
What is death but a negligible accident?
Why should I be out of mind
Because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you for an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner
All is well.
Nothing is past; nothing is lost
One brief moment and all will be as it was before
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

Until we meet again,
From your loving daughter

Happy Father's Day, Dad! I left you a stone from County Kerry at your gravesite that I picked up on our first trip to Ireland on September 1990. That was a magical trip and I am glad I got to share it with you.
People told me so many stories about you recently. Scott, Tim's friend, told me how you fooled him when you picked them up from school in eighth grade, telling him that you were taking them to Elgin, an hour or more ride away, rather than home. I asked why he believed you and he said because you were an adult!
One of your coworkers told me how many interesting conversations you had at work. He said you weren't a typical factory worker, not very mechanically inclined and a bit eccentric but very intelligent! I miss you Dad.

Dear Laura and Family,

I am saddened to read of your Dad's passing. His path and mine would cross from time to time at various NAMI doings, and at the annual Mass for Mental Illness Awareness at St. Josaphat. I remember him as a quiet and very affirming gentleman who himself and his family were an inspiration. My prayers are with all of you, especially with Mom as she moves ahead without her life partner.

Blessings,
Connie

My father was the envy of all my friends for his quiet wit and sense of humor. He gave the me the most precious gift, unconditional love, and taught me to love reading and learning. We shared so much together, heartache at the loss of my brother John and sister Jackie, and joy in visiting Ireland and Scotland and listening to music at Gaelic Park, the Irish Heritage Center and Milwaukee Irish Fest. I will miss him but I know there is a big party going on upstairs!
