Michael Curry Obituary

CURRY, MICHAEL K.

Michael K. Curry, 59, passed away June 15, 2011 with his wife by his side after a brave battle with lymphoma. Michael was born September 14, 1951 in the Bronx, NY to William J. Curry and the late Irene Moshuk Curry. He graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in American Studies and English, and received an MFA in Cinema Studies from New York University as well as an MBA from Fordham University. Among Michael's many accomplishments in direct marketing was the launch of Book-of-the-Month Club's first eCommerce platform in 2000. Most recently he was Sr. Vice President of Customer Acquisition Marketing for Direct Brands, which includes BMG Music Service, Columbia House, and Book-of-the-Month Club.

He will be remembered for his exhaustive, enthusiastic knowledge of film, music, books and Rotisserie baseball; his gentle and self-effacing leadership in the workplace; his gift for taking conversations on fascinating tangents; and for the great joy he found each day in raising his two daughters.

He is survived by his wife of thirteen years, Katherine, and his beloved daughters Lauren and Julia.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 25, at 11 a.m at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 84 Ehrhardt Rd., Pearl River, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's memory may be made to the Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation, PO BOX 374, Birmingham, MI 48012-0374.

Although I worked with Michael, the most enriching moments spent with him were discussing film and acting. He also showed a lot of compassion for those who worked for him, and even though he worked really hard, you can see, in his heart, it was a job that helped support bigger things, like his family.

Michael, I remember you well and saddened that you're gone, but I pray that God gives you a well-deserved rest in a paradise far beyond this world.

Dear Katherine,
I remember with great pleasure our QPB New Vioces/New Visions selection committee dinners, at which Michael held forth with exuberance, wit and authority on the nominated books. My sincere condolences to you and your girls.

I will always remember Michael as a witty and supportive colleague. He holds a special place in my private pantheon of quirky, cool, genuine, book-loving personalities from my most treasured, halcyon years at QPB and BOMC.

I was privileged to work for and get to know Michael at Bookspan. The line in Michael’s obituary about his gift for “taking conversations on fascinating tangents” made me smile. I was lucky enough to be part of some of those conversations, and they were never anything short of delightful.

I will miss Michael. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Katerine,
I was so sorry to hear about Michael's passing. He and I dated for quite a while in the 70's. I remember just how much he loved films and I think we must have seen every $1.00 movie there was to see. In those days he was living on a college student's budget.
I kept in touch with Mrs. Curry for many years and she told me how much happiness Micheal had found with you, and how much joy being a father brought to his life. I could not help but get reflective about the past after hearing the sad news. I will keep you and your daughters in my prayers and please give my best to Mr. Curry

Dear Katherine, Lauren and Julia, I am so sad. I worked with Michael at BOMC. I have a fond place in my heart for him....so funny... such a story teller... love of baseball! He so wanted a family and family love. Even though is he gone, you made his life here ultimate joy. You will always have him in your heart. My dad died when I was 12 of cancer as well. My love to all of you. I am so sorry that I cannot make the service.

Dear Katherine, Lauren and Julia,

I did not know Michael well except to know, or sense rather, that he was a most sensitive and gracious man. He always greeted you with smile and sincere interest. Megan would always comment that he was "The Nicest Man", and I will never forget his keen interest in my wide plank floors. :-)

I am so deeply sorry for his suffering and your loss.

Prayers to you and all Michaels family.

I met Michael only a few times, but was impressed by what a kind soul he offered to those he met. He was so welcoming and his presence was so welcome.
