Mary Head Obituary

Head, Mary born in Los Angeles, California, as Mary McWherter, to Mary Price (deceased) and Robert J. McWherter (deceased). Later, adopted, along with her brother Robert (Jr., Deceased), by Nonnie (deceased) and Bebop (deceased), where they gained two sisters: Denise and Shar. Attended Mary Mount High School and later Seattle University. She then moved to Chicago and married (later divorced; no children) George "Ted" Head; CPD (deceased). Spent decades working at First Chicago (later Bank One); a veritable archetype for women in that particular arena, for that era, excelling within her profession, and amassing too many friendships to count in the process. Retired early, and at the top. Ample community leader, rescuer and mender of both animals and people alike. Exponent and advocate of Gay Rights. Active member of Triangle Neighbors/ LVCC and a staple of Direct Aid Chicago and Buck's Saloon. Lived in the same house for over 30 years. Upon her death she was single mother to Gary (partner Elizabeth Capua) Head and Eric Zich. Aunt of Gentry McWherter and many more. An immensely beloved friend of an incalculable spread. And someone no one will ever, ever forget. She is survived by those that she helped survive, and a toothless cat. She is the world's greatest Noodle to Gary's son Lynx. Memorial service Sunday, September 13th at 2pm, at the park located at 815 W. Roscoe here in Chicago. Donations in her name: www.arfhousechicago.org. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Illinois, 773-281-5058.

What a wonderful, caring, fun person Mary was! My husband, Bob, worked with her at First Chicago. We all had many fun times together. When Bob and I got married, Mary arranged Bob's bachelor party -- all women as I recall -- and served as bar tendress at our reception (it was a low cost wedding.) For many of our guests, what they remembered most was Mary.
Our sympathies to you, Gary and Eric.

I knew Mary since 1982 when I worked at Heller Financial and she worked at First Chicago. She was the "go to" person at First Chicago, the person to whom I went to get things done. We had the opportunity to spend many, many evenings in social settings. She was a lot of fun. The first time I met her for lunch I was told the story of how she turned her dress backwards while walking down a busy street in the Loop. She was always doing good for someone, whether it be serving meals at soup kitchens on holidays or some other act of kindness. I am glad to have known her. I really wish we hadn't lost contact over the years. A true original.

We didn't know Mary very well, only seeing her on our annual trips to Cirque with the jello shots she would always bring. She loved to laugh and it was always good to see her again. I know she will be missed in the neighborhood.......... Dick Freer and Mike Crane (Chicago)

Mary was my Godmother and great friend. Often when I just needed to chat all I had to do was call Mary. She was a wonderful friend to my mother Nancy Smajo who has now long passed. I hope and pray they are together now, having a drink ,laughing and catching up. Gary and Eric how blessed you were to have been raised by this amazing women. I did not hear until today and am deeply saddened by her passing. There are no words nor a yardstick long enough to measure the love she gave to so many and I am so lucky to have been one of those people.

Mary,
Peace and love to all your family. I was only a child when we met. My family became friends with you and your son on the wonderful cruise to the Bahamas and trip to Disney World/Epcot in 1989. You were a wonderful and strong woman. God bless you.

To those who crossed paths with Mary, consider yourself lucky. For those who crossed paths with Mary and began a lifelong friendship, consider yourself blessed. She was a wonderful woman who only thought of others. We were truly saddened when we received the news. But as we think of you we smile, because so many good times were spent with so much laughter. Eric and Gary, you know we love you guys, and you will always be part of our family (even tho you're all grown up).

Mary was such an astounding woman who took me in as her own for many years. I was so sad to hear of her loss and am saddened greatly. To Gary and Eric, keep your Mother's memory alive. She offered so much to everyone, especially all the homeless pets she took it. Your Mother was and is a Saint and I will miss her greatly!!

Mary was a most unique individual.I first met her in a business capacity but that quickly blossomed into a beautiful friendship. She was possibly the most caring and helpful person I ever knew.I know both I and anyone who ever knew her will miss her greatly. Stay happy, Mar, wherever you are.

Mary, you were my neighbor 33 years ago and though I have moved many times I always felt you were always there. We had some amazing times together and some of those I'll keep between us. I cannot believe the number of people and animals you saved from disaster. Your compassion and generosity for those of us with HIV/AIDS, both living and deceased, was so unconditional and so loving. If you couldn't save our lives, you saved our souls with your love. I could write about my love and admiration for you forever; I miss you and my partner, Gene, misses you. danny and Gene Tucson,AZ

Our Dear Mary will be missed by so many. She brought warmth and love into the lives of all who knew her. We were all blessed to have known her, laughed with her, drank with her and had her attentive ear when you had a problem. A caring, lovely, stunning, thoughtful and generous woman is our Mary. May she rest in Peace.
