Mary Cappo Obituary

Cappo, Mary Anne

Prominent Evanston resident Mary Anne Cappo, passed away Tuesday, October 26 at her home in Westminster Place after a long battle with a debilitating lung disease. She is survived by her husband, Joe Cappo; two children, Elizabeth Gallo and John J. Cappo; and granddaughters, Josephine and Lucy Gallo. Mary Anne was a graduate of the original Glenbrook High School and the University of Michigan, where she majored in English and minored in Islamic art. She wanted to attend the University of Michigan Law School but was told they did not reserve spots for ladies. Mary Anne was active in Evanston and North Shore philanthropies for many years, starting with her service as PTA president at Orrington School. She continued her leadership in Evanston as chair of the Evanston Public Library board and later the Evanston Community Foundation, both of which she led to significant growth. She also was a former board member and benefactor of the North Shore Senior Center and the Cradle. Mary Anne's early career began as the public relations director for the March of Dimes. Then, for nearly 20 years, Mary Anne was a popular mortgage broker in the Evanston real estate community and later worked at First Bank and Trust of Evanston, now Byline Bank. Mary Anne was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling and collecting art from around the world. Joe, little did we know when you were `Walkin´ the Beat´ that the road ahead would include lengthy health struggles for our families. Our hearts bleed in sympathy for Mary Anne´s struggles, and in empathy with you, your children, and your grandchildren for your loss. May God patch the potholes so you can walk in peace.

Joe, Elizabeth and Jay,
We were so privileged to call Mary Anne our friend and will miss her so much. We will cherish the memories of our time at the lake and the Friday Night fish fries. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.
May you have happy memories .

Joe, Elizabeth and Jay,
I would so love to be with you today to grieve together and celebrate Mary Ann's life. Elizabeth and Jay, she loved you both so much, and she was such a dedicated and caring mother. Joe, you and Mary Ann, with your knowing eye contact and cute sassy smiles, told so much about the intimacy you shared in your wonderful marriage.
I send you all my love, and will be thinking of you today.

I became acquainted with Mary Ann when I was active with the Cradle in the 80´s. I enjoyed working with her at that time. My prayers go out to her family at this time.

Mary Anne was such a fine human. I met her when I served on the Evanston Community Foundation board, and she was exceptionally kind, smart, interested in everyone, and dedicated to serving others. And she had a great sense of humor. Mary Anne was a wonderful model to be emulated by the rest of us. I am sorry she has passed on, so sorry for her family.

Mary Anne will never die in my memories. She has been one of the warmest, most positive and helpful people I've known. Joe, I haven't stayed in touch, but we have seen each other a few times and I have heard about Mary Anne's work in Evanston. I just had a hip replacement, though, and can't get to the service Monday.

Mary Anne introduced me to janet, my first wife, and we introduced you to Mary Anne our best friend in high school and the University of Michigan. I don't know your children and grandchildren, but I want them to know that their mother was one of the most important and helpful people at our high school, and it appears at the other institutions she worked with and for.
