Marvin McCray Obituary

McCray, Marvin Richard adored father, beloved son, loving brother, and friend passed away at the age of 53 on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Tallahassee, Florida, after a long illness. He was interned on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, in Chattahoochee, Florida. Marvin was born on October 8, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated in 1971 from St. Martin's elementary school and in 1975 from De La Salle High School. Following graduation, Marvin enrolled at Illinois Benedictine College in Lisle, Illinois, where he graduated in 1979 with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. Marvin continued his education at the Illinois Institute of Technology, achieving his Doctorates degree in Psychology. Marvin went on to begin a successful career with the Bureau of Prisons. His last assignment was at the Federal Correctional Facility in Tallahassee, Florida, where he also made his home away from Chicago. He subsequently retired from the Bureau of Prisons during 2007, after a highly distinguished 20 year career. Marvin was a strong man, a man of conviction and purpose; someone who lived by both his words and by his actions. An accomplished athlete and basketball player, he was respected as a fierce competitor and trusted teammate. His experiences as a young man growing up in Chicago prepared him for the challenges ahead and enabled him to become a loving father for his children, a strong provider for his family, a mentor to his co-workers and a man loved and admired by his friends. Marvin was preceded in death by his beloved son Jamil, his father Samuel, older brother Daniel, and sister Mattye. He is survived by his wife Brenda and daughters Netia, Gabrielle, and Danika. He is also survived by his mother Willie Mae, godmother, Pearl Stringer, older sisters Betty Mosby, Rita Ann, and Katie, his younger brother Nathaniel and a host of loving friends, neighbors and former co-workers in Chicago, Illinois, Savannah, Georgia, and Miami and Tallahassee, Florida. His family has invited friends to attend a memorial service for Marvin at Saint Anselm's Catholic Church, 6045 South Michigan Avenue, on Saturday, July 24th from 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. A repast will be held from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. immediately following the service at Saint Anselm's Convent, located adjacent to the church. Additional information can be obtained from Saint Anselm's Rectory at 773.493.5959.

I am shocked and saddened to learn about Marvin's death. I attended graduate school with Marvin at IIT, where he and I were two of the few African-American students in the Clinical Psychology program. Marvin was, indeed, a very strong man and proud man. My prayers and thoughts are with his wife and children.

Rest in Peace. You are surely missed and loved here on Earth. I hope that you have made it to the other side and are no longer suffering. May God keep you in his kingdom and let you know true peace.
