Marjorie Silverman Obituary

Silverman, Marjorie Ann Patros (April 11, 1939 - October 14, 2015) Passed away Wednesday after a valiant battle with cancer. Marjorie, daughter of Marjorie and Augustine Patros, was born into an Italian community in Girard, Ohio. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern in 1961 with a B.A. in French, having spent a junior year abroad at the Sorbonne. She wed Edwin Barry Silverman of Chicago, with whom she enjoyed 53 years of marriage and two children, Alexei and Maria. Marjorie was a hotel concierge for 25 years. She was a founding member of the Chicago Hotel Concierge Association and Les Clefs d'Or USA, and was the first woman and first American to serve as President of Les Clefs d'Or International, a concierge organization in over 50 countries. After her retirement in 2004, she continued to work as a lecturer, meeting planner, and consultant. Marjorie was a renowned gardener, a voracious reader of everything from novels to The New Yorker, a collector of antiques, an incredible cook, lifelong Democrat and a world traveler. Her beautiful home was a tribute to her taste and creativity. She is remembered by her husband, Edwin; son, Alexei; daughter, Maria; son-in-law, Bill; and grandson, Nathaniel; as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins, Lincoln Park neighbors and her Clefs d'Or family. A service will be held 12:00 noon on Monday, October 19, 2015 at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd., Skokie, IL (www.cjfinfo.com). Interment 1:30 p.m. at Westlawn Cemetery, 7801 W. Montrose Ave., Norridge, IL. Visitation to follow at the family's home. Shiva will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marjorie's memory to Les Clefs d'Or USA (www.lcdusa.org).

Ed, I may be distant but I do receive news occasionally, and returning from a vacation I am belatedly saddened to learn of your loss. I met Marjorie more than once and she always impressed me as a caring and intelligent person. You may recall I even had dinner at your house - as I recall it was south of Fullerton way back then.

Ed, I am so sorry for your loss and wish you comfort and peace in this unhappy time. My very best wishes for you and yours.

Dear Ed, Maria and Alexei,

What an elegant lady she was! You were blessed to have had her in your lives and I count myself fortunate to have met her. The world lost a beautiful human being who gave so much to the community, and the country lost a wonderful Democrat! So sad that she is no longer with us. We will truly miss her!
