Margaret Herguth Obituary

Herguth, Margaret (nee Silsbee) 79, a long-time resident of Wilmette, most recently of Glenview, died peacefully Friday night in nursing/hospice care, after being diagnosed last year with Alzheimer's and dementia. Born in Michigan, as a child her family moved around for her father's job, making stops in New York and Maryland before settling in the Chicago area. She attended New Trier High School, Mount Mary College and Northwestern University, where she earned a master's in journalism. Marge worked for what is now the Pioneer Press chain of newspapers as a feature writer, then at the Chicago Daily News. There she met her future husband, Robert J. Herguth, a reporter and columnist. Marge was long active in her parish, St. Francis Xavier in Wilmette, where she was proud to be the first female usher. While raising her family and after, she continued to write, sometimes travel articles for newspapers, sometimes short stories. She authored a book about North Dakota, where she had a lot of family along the Montana border, and was active in the Off Campus Writers' Workshop. She had a dear circle of friends there and from different periods of her life, dating to college and beyond. Her family appreciates the care shown to Marge by the staff at Bethany Terrace Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Rose. Aside from her husband, Marge is survived by children, Amy, Robert (Sue) and Jennifer (Brad); grandchildren, Mila, Annika, Eli, Ava, Otto, Matthew, Aidan, Luke and Lauren; and honorary daughter, Coralie (Ceaser), and their children, Nunzzio and Dante. Visitation will be Monday, April 14, 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m at Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd. at Old Orchard Rd., Skokie, IL 60077. A Funeral Mass will be offered Tuesday, April 15, at 12:00 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 524 Ninth St. at Linden Ave., Wilmette, IL 60091. Burial will follow in Northbrook. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Misericordia, 6300 North Ridge, Chicago, IL 60660. Info: 847-675-1990 or www.donnellanfuneral.com

I am late coming to this. So sorry. I called to wish my dear friend a belated 80th birthday and found my phone numbers were not working. Today I found this obit. What a shock.

We have been friends since we sailed together in high school. She has always been a loyal and generous friend, along with you, dear Bob. I will miss our sporadic visits. We have wonderful memories to nourish our spirits. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I will try to get another phone number from Bob C.

Much love,
Jeanne Hill

Dear Herguths:

Please accept my deepest condolences. I fondly remember spending time with Marge when I'd come over to play with Jeni so many years ago: lots of stories, her perfect PB&J sandwiches, unmatched faith, patience and compassion. Marge was the gold standard in being a great neighbor and I am deeply grateful for the kindness and love your family extended to mine.

Lots of love to you all,

David Wylie

Dear Bob and family: I read with mixed pleasure and sadness the wonderful profile of Margaret. I remember her well from the days of Little league when Bob played with my son David on our first team. We had a group of congenial and frendly parents in those days. I also had the privilege of seeing Bob regularly when he was in the Sun-Times building, and I was across the street at IBM. We shad many pleasant times together there and in Wilmette. My condolences to you all.

Dear Bob(Sr.),
Ted and I just learned today about Marge's passing. We are so very sorry and wish we had known about the visitation and her funeral. We lived across the street from you and Marge for 28 years in Wilmette, and always thought of you both as wonderfully kind neighbors. I always enjoyed talking to Marge and admired her every time I saw her in church making the collections. Our sincere condolences go out to you and your family. We hope all the good memories will help you get through this difficult time. Sincerely, Gloria and Ted Biedron

Marge was a wonderful person. My association with her was as a Mariner Scout while we were at New Trier HS. We sailed together so many times out of Wilmette Harbor. Although have not seen her much in the last years due to geography --- she was a very special part of my life.

We Chicago Daily News veterans shall always remember Marge for her optimism, determination and sweet nature. No one did more than she and Bob to honor the paper's spirit and tradition. Publishing the Daily News alumni newsletter for many years was a major, sometimes difficult task. Here in Kenosha, we old Chicago news hounds enjoyed regular Friday breakfasts with the Herguths. Thank you, Marge, for adding sparkle to our lives.

Dear Bob, we were devastated to read this morning of the loss of your loving, gracious, compassionate Marge. We didn't know she had not been well. It's impossible for us to imagine a Marge who was not a fount of energy, good cheer and good will, always concerned about the welfare of her friends and family. We are happy you and Marge found each other, and brightened each other's lives for so many years. Not long enough, though, we know; it's never long enough. Our love and sympathy, Bob, to you and to your children and their families. Lois and Wayne Wille

Dear Amy,

Your mom was such a lovely lady, a real "class act" as her generation would say. It has been many years but I wanted to send my condolences and I am sorry to miss the wake. She raised three great kids and was a fixture in Wilmette for many years.
