Lucius Bell Obituary

Bell Sr., Lucius PIONEER NAVY JAZZMAN, One of Chicago's most talented and respected jazz musicians and the leader of his own band of 51 years, The Swingin' Seven Eighth Notes, died on Monday, September 13, at the age of 78. In 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was accepted into the newly formed Navy Jazz Band at Great Lakes, becoming one of the first African-Americans to integrate the Navy as a musician. Lucius Sr. leaves to celebrate his life: Geneva, his loving wife of 56 years; one son, Lucius Bell Jr.; one daughter, Jacquelyn Williams (Jeffrey); three grandchildren; one great-grandson and a great big loving bunch of nieces, nephews and friends. Services will be held on Saturday, September 18 at St. Mark United Methodist Church. The wake and jam session are from 10 a.m.-noon and the service is from noon to 1 p.m.
