Linda Hureston Obituary

Hureston Ph.D. RN, Dr. Linda Barriea Dr. Linda Barriea Hureston, Ph.D., RN, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away quietly on March 28, 2018 in Blue Island, IL. Linda led a dedicated life as a loving mother, sister, aunt, in-law, niece, cousin, friend, nurse, and professor. Through these roles, she had a great impact on family, students, community and the field of nursing. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018 at A.A. Rayner and Sons Funeral Home, 318 E. 71st Street, Chicago, IL 60619 from 4:009:00 p.m. A Pre-Pass will begin at 9:30 a.m. and Visitation, followed by Funeral services and be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at A.A. Rayner & Sons at 11:00 a.m. with Father Paul Whittington officiating. Burial will follow at Restvale Cemetery, 11700 S. Laramie Street, Alsip, IL 60803. Dr. Linda Hureston was born on July 19, 1949 in Chicago, IL to Louis Calvin Hureston and Emma Louise Arthur in the historic African American Bronzeville community. She was the second eldest of four siblings: her eldest sister, Cynthia Louise Hureston; younger sister, Attorney Patricia Hureston Lee; and younger brother, Louis Sheldon Hureston. Dr. Hureston and her loving partner, Dr. Percy McDonald became the parents of one son, Jon Christopher Hureston McDonald, who was the inspiration of her life. As a mother, a devout Catholic and a career woman, Linda was always clear on her priorities to serve her family, her church and her community. Dr. Hureston graduated from Our Lady of the Gardens Elementary School in 1963 and then attended Harlan High School, graduating in the Class of 1967. Linda earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN 1972) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN 1977) from the University of Illinois, completing a Master Thesis on the subject: THE UNWED ADOLESCENT: HER CRISES AND COPING MECHANISMS USED BETWEEN THE NINTH MONTH OF PREGNANCY AND TWO MONTHS POSTPARTUM. She earned a Ph.D. in Education from Northwestern University (Ph.D. 1989) writing her dissertation on the subject: ORCHESTRATING A CAREER TRAJECTORY: THE NURSE EDUCATOR IN ACADEMIA. She also wrote and edited numerous articles and books, including, STUDY GUIDE FOR FRISCH/FRISCH PYSCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSING (2010). In her early career, Dr. Hureston worked as a registered nurse at the University of Illinois Hospital and, in 1984, became an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University, staying at NU until its Nursing program closed in 1990. She then became a Professor of Nursing at Chicago State University in 1991 and served as the Chair of the Department of Nursing College of Health Sciences from 1993 1999 and again from 2002 - 2005. Dedicating her career to clinical education, Dr. Hureston was a founding member of the Association of Black Nurses Faculty, Inc. and won many awards. In 2006, she received the designation as Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) from the National League of Nursing and recognitions, including being featured in Ebony Magazine, Employee of the Month for organizing a national conference on diversity and health disparity and for showcasing the assessment progress for the Department of Nursing. In 2015, she retired from teaching and nursing and turned her attention to her immediate and extended family, online/distance education and to her hobbies of beanie babies, beading, poetry and writing. Dr. Hureston was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Louise Hureston; her father, Louis Calvin Hureston; and her sister, Cynthia Louise Hureston. Dr. Hureston is survived by her son, Jon Christopher Hureston McDonald; her brother, Louis Sheldon Hureston; sister, Attorney Patricia Hureston Lee; her sister-in-law, Denise Theibaut Hureston and her brother-in-law, Darryl Michael Lee; her nephews, Sheldon Edward Holmes, Brandon Louis Lee and Marcus Julien Lee; aunts, uncles, and cousins. Tributes and flowers may be sent to A.A. Rayner and Sons Funeral Home to the attention of the family of Dr. Hureston and the family is grateful for all gestures of friendship.
