Lillian Bruss Obituary

Died February 9, 2006

TRAVERSE CITY - Lillian L. Bruss, 96, of Traverse City, died at Bortz Health Care Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006.

She was born Feb. 19, 1909, in Percy, Ill., to Edward and Blanche (Heape) Tribout. On April 8, 1925, Lillian married Elmer Bruss in East St. Louis, Ill.

Lillian had a zest for life and lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed spending weekends and summers at the family cottage on Harsons Island. Lillian's great, strong will and great sense of adventure found her trying just about anything, including the time she kissed the salmon.

Lillian gardened and liked canning vegetables for the family. She loved having her grandchildren visit, especially when they spent the night. She would play dress up with them and treat them with ice cream. Lillian had a special place in her heart for her beloved dogs, Sam and Duke.

She had many hobbies, however, her favorites were shopping garage sales and the QVC network.

Lillian spent the last seven years at Bortz Health Care with her best friend, Marg. Together they attended all the offered activities, with Bingo being her favorite!

Surviving are her son, Donald (JoAnne) Bruss of Leesburg, Fla.; four granddaughters, Deb (Bruce) Lautner of Traverse City, Cyndi (Brent) Lake of Williamsburg, Lisa (Rick) Schaub of Lake Ann and Stephanie Bruss of Traverse City; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Helen Glidden.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer Bruss; and great-granddaughter, Melissa Sue Lautner.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services at noon, at the Covell Funeral Home. The Rev. Dave Minger will officiate. Burial will take place Thursday, Feb. 16, at Cadillac Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Clinton Township.

The family asks those wishing to give memorials to please remember the Cherryland Humane Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

I would like to thank my grandma for all the fun times I remember at the cottage on Harsens Island. The summer we reroofed the cottage with my dad, listening to ball games in the trailer with grandpa tribout, grandpa elmer and my dad. For letting us wear your jewelry and makeup at dress up time and for the great roast beef on sundays after church. Thanks for all the good memories. I will miss you.

Love, Deb

Aunt Lillian was our vacation mom away from mom when we were growing up on the farm.

She always went with us when Grandma and Grandpa Tribout took us to Higgins Lake on vacation each summer.

All of us kids and grownups playing pinochle and going down to the camp store for fudgesicles are some of the things about her I'll always remember.

She was a blessing to us kids(Dick, Don, Jim & Gail)when we were growing up and will forever remain in our hearts and prayers.

My heart was surprised and saddened to read about Lillian's passing in today's paper. (2/12)

I am Marjorie's friend who comes by and visits with Marjorie and Lillian on a regular basis. Lillian has been a precious and dear friend of Marjorie's these past 7 years, and my dear friend also. It was difficult to move Marjorie from her home to Bortz, but when they put her and Lillian together, it turned out to be an unexpected and special blessing.

The 3 of us had many special times together. To all the Bruss family, you have a precious and loving grandma, whom I was privileged to know these past 7 years. Marjorie is going to miss her,and I will too!

I just visited with Lillian a week ago today on my way home from work. The gals were in the dining room waiting for dinner.

Lillian was smiling as I gave her a hug and a kiss...hello and goodbye.

My heart aches as I realize it was a final goodbye........until I see her in Heaven. When the 3 of us talked and read some Bible and prayed, it seemed like Lillian was trusting Jesus as her Saviour, and so should be Home with Him now.

Blessings and love to Lillian's family, Roberta Mesko, Traverse City.
