Schwerdt, Leonard J. 78, Topeka, died Monday, February 9, 2009 at Midland Hospice House from kidney failure. Leonard was born June 16, 1930 in Topeka, the son of John and Clara Bauer Schwerdt. He married Bernadine Perham on February 5, 1972 in Chicago. Leonard graduated from Hayden High School in 1948 and attended Benedictine College before entering the US Air Force where he served for nine years. Leonard was employed by the US Postal Service in Topeka and transferred to Chicago where he retired in 1985 after 30 years of service. In 1994, after his wife retired, they returned to Topeka. He played football during his high school years and in military service which lead to his lifelong love of watching sports and his favorite teams included the St. Louis Cardinals, Notre Dame football, KU basketball, the Green Bay Packers and the Los Angeles Lakers. He was a member of Mater Dei Parish (Holy Name), the Knights of Columbus Council No. 8059. Survivors include his wife, Bernadine, Topeka, a sister, Sandy McAdam, Topeka, and numerous nieces and nephews. His brothers, John and Donald Schwerdt and sister, Theresa Clure preceded him in death. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd, Topeka KS 66614, where a K of C rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. and a parish rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, at Mater Dei Holy Name Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial or Mass contributions may be made to Mater Dei Parish, sent in care of the funeral home.
