Leonard O'Connor Obituary

O'Connor Jr., Leonard G. 80, of Northbrook, passed away March 3, 2010. He fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on March 29, 1929 in Chicago. Len was the beloved and devoted husband of Nancy (nee Rhodes), his best friend and loving and devoted wife. He is survived by his dear brother, Alan (Diane), dear sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jane Brenders, Clarence Rhodes, Mary Wurster, Earl (Esther) Rhodes, June Deitke, and the late Shirley Rhodes, loving uncle of Kevin (Kristen Bailey) O'Connor, Greg (Dorothy) O'Connor, Karyn (Alex) Sotiriades, Paul Brenders, Michael Brenders, James (Gloria) Brenders, Kevin Brenders, Ellen (George) Cowgill, Barbara (Ron) Unger, Dan Rhodes, Deborah (John) Rumery, Dale (Rena) Rhodes, Cathy (Rick) Varela, Bette (Larry) Beachy, James (Patricia) Rhodes, Joseph (Michelle) Deitke, Richard Deitke, Karen (Stephen) Rochford, Randy (Debbie) Deitke, Kimberley Deitke, and the late Tommy Brenders, great-uncle of many. He was a graduate of Loyola Academy and Loyola University; U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Infantry Korean War Veteran; 41 year employee of A.M. Castle & Co.; past president and board member of Hull House Association. Visitation 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, at N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Rd. (just south of Lake Ave. on west side), Glenview. Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m. at St. Norbert Church, 1809 Walters Ave., Northbrook, IL. Interment Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Norbert Parish Educational Endowment Fund, 1809 Walters Ave., Northbrook, IL 60062; Clearbrook 1835 W. Len was truly one of a kind. I have great memories of family gatherings at your house that I treasure. I will also be forever grateful for the time Len spent with my Dad after his stroke - working with him to help him recover to his full potential. He was truly a gift and will be missed.
