My name is Rebecca Burkhardt and I was there the night of Katies wake. I work for Smith-Corcoran. I just discovered this site or I would have written sooner. I offer you my prayers and I know the pain of losing her must have been tremendously painfull. Im sure it still is.I know that I didnt know Katie but I have to say that she has touched me deeply. I cried for her and for your family. I believe in when a soul will touch another soul and she has definetly touched mine. I feel like I could have known her my whole life. I see the impact that she has made on a tremendous amount of people. She was truly special.I feel like i miss a really good friend. I try to honor her every day as im sure you do to. As a parent of an U of I sophomore and a patient of yours at one time, it is with great sorrow to hear of the loss of your daughter Katlin. As an employee of Rush, I never forgot how caring you were with me after surgery on 8K and remember how we talked about our children then. Though not a child, I too know personally how hard it is to lose someone so close so suddenly.

I am so sorry for your loss. I met Katie at the U of I through some mutual friends and although I didn't get to know her as well as I would have liked, I can say that she was a kind, loving person. It breaks my heart that such a beautiful, talented girl with so much hope for the future could be taken from this world so soon. I know many cared for her greatly and that she will be deeply missed. May the love of family and friends comfort you at this difficult time.

I was so lucky to have taught Katlin. She was the sweet, smart and kind. I will take her sister's words form the Daily Illini, "McGuire's sister said the best way to remember Katie is to live life to the fullest." I'll do that and teach my 6 year old daughter about this wonderful student I had. I'm glad I had a year to know you !
