A letter from Bets' Grandchildren as read at her funeral service.
Dear Nana Banana,
While you lie there in peace (notice we didn’t say lay) we wanted to thank you for teaching us not only the rules of grammar but also about life, love and laughter.
You were very sharp witted, even in your last days. You truly were the world’s best at cards, especially when it was a nickel a point. You had a pithy wisecrack for every situation. You helped us learn a valuable lesson: how to find the humor in every situation and even how to laugh at ourselves.
You taught us to be financially savvy. You knew that getting something on sale was good, but getting it free was better. In spite of this, you would always splurge on us.
You instilled in us the value of learning both in formal education and in life’s daily lessons. We all love to read because of your influence.
You had a clever saying for every situation. You told us about whatchamacalits and dooferjigees. You reminded us that “who has more fun than people”. You just said it because it was true.
You taught us that sometimes bad things happen, but it’s up to us to decide how we respond. You always had a positive attitude regardless of the circumstances. So we all try to keep our “eyes upon the donut and not upon the hole”.
You made sure that each one of us felt special and unique.
• Melissa wants to thank you for being a constant and reliable influence on her life. She’s glad you taught her that travel is enjoyed three times: once in the planning, once in the doing and once in the remembering.
• Dell wants thank you for giving him the love of reading that opened a whole world of new ideas.
• Melynda wants to thank you for always letting her stay with you; teaching her to laugh often; to always find a bargain and encouraging her to get a master’s degree.
• Tim wants to thank you for your quick wit and letting him teach you how to use a palm pilot when you were 92 years old; for being his home away from home when he was in seminary and always having a pot of goulash ready.
• Tamara wants to tell you that your encouragement meant so much to her. You consistently told her that “whatever makes you happy, makes me happy”. She is glad she learned that you’re never too old to dye your hair and put on a little lipstick.
Lastly, all your grandchildren want to tell that they love you and they are just saying that because it’s true.

So sorry to hear of Bet's passing. You all remember how her and my Mom Myrtle could get into uncontrollable laughing jags. I learned the value of "straight talk" from her. She'll be missed.

Mrs. Drenk was a turning point in a troubled time. As my 5th grade teacher 1957-59, she gave me confidence when no one else would. I thank her to this day.

Betts and my late wife were partners in the classroom. They were so close that Betts or Harriet could start a sentence and the other could finish it. Many stories were told at the dinner table. A fast speed boat was one of them. I'm sure she will be greatly missed.

She was one great lady. One of my first teachers back in 2nd grade at Melzer School. Everyone loved her, she was one teacher I never forgot. She lived a great life and will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with the family at this time of sorrow.

I am a former student of Mrs. Drenk (46 years ago), I remember her very well. She had a memorization learning process that I have passed along to my children and has remained in my memory all these years. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
