Josephine Mathius Obituary

Mathius, Josephine Lorraine "Jo" (nee Buglio), age 75. Formerly of Chicago, died on April 22nd at her home in Orland Park. Devoted wife of Marvin J. Mathius Sr., dedicated mother of Marvin Jr. (Lisa) and Mark (Lorelei), loving grandmother of John Paul, Ashley Brooke and Jacqueline Eve, caring sister of James Buglio and Louise (Timothy) Cummings, kind aunt and cousin to many. Visitation Wednesday, from 2 to 9 p.m. Funeral Thursday, 9:15 a.m. from the Robert J. Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home, 9000 W. 151st Street, Orland Park, to St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mass 10 a.m. Interment Good Shepherd Cemetery. Jo was born in Chicago on June 4, 1931 to Lucille and Frank Buglio and was a long-time resident of the City's South Side. She grew up attending St. Ann's Grammar School and parish and later attended Harper High School. In her adult years, she lived in St. Albert the Great Parish in Burbank, St. Bede Parish in Chicago, St. Germaine Parish in Oak Lawn and St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Orland Park. Jo was an active member of the Orland Park Senior Citizen Community attending countless community events. During the summer months she could be counted upon being seen nearly everyday at the Orland Park Aquatic Center enjoying the sun and practicing her backstroke. In her youth, Jo was a skilled and avid figure skater who delighted family and friends with her keen athletic abilities. In addition to her considerable prowess as a figure skater, Jo was a gifted athlete in softball, volleyball, track and field, table tennis and most notably horseshoes, at which she defeated many male opponents. In her later years, Jo excelled in bowling, regularly capturing top honors among the female competitors in the leagues in which she competed. Along with Marvin, her husband of 57 years, Jo was the key member of the committee to organize the "Old Neighborhood Reunion" gathering residents from the areas of 63rd Street to 47th Street and State Street to Halsted Street. The 362 attendees represented numerous schools from throughout the area. This event saw many return to Chicago from as far away as California. Jo considered this one of her greatest personal accomplishments of her later years. www.sheehyfh.com 708-857-7878.

Dearest Mathius Family,
Don and I were most saddened by Jo's illness and suffering. She was so blessed to have a loving family. We know the vigil was long and heart breaking but Jo is at peace, out of pain, and on another journey home to her final resting place.

She was always full of sparkles and glad to see us at family gatherings. We shall all miss those special times without her.

We said prayers to ease worry, sorrow, grant healing or asking for God's will to cope with suffering. The deed is done! She's in heaven looking down on all of us right now.

Life goes on with fond memories.

All our love, Don and Mary Jane Gribnitz

Jo was always smiling and kind. I am sorry that her last days were so painful for her and her family. I am sure she was glad to be in her home surrounded by family during her final days. I think it meant a lot to her. She will be missed. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you Toots, Marv and Mark, Lisa and Lori. The little girls will miss Grandma, as will Johnny. I will miss Jo too. She was the only woman I knew who wore something sparkling (even to a barbeque!) every time I saw her. That was her style, it was her!
