Joseph Zurro Obituary

August 14, 2009 Joseph Zurro, 96, of East Syracuse, died Friday at Stonehedge Nursing Home. He was born in San Martino in Pensilis (Campobasso), Italy, the oldest of 13 children and immigrated to the United States via Ottawa, Ontario, in 1953. He was a member of Bricklayers Local #28 and in 1971 was named Mason of the Year by the Syracuse Area Architects Association for his stonework on Valle's Steakhouse. His hand is evident in many buildings and churches to this day. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Genevieve Bottar Zurro; two sons, Leon D. (JoAnne) of Clay and Joseph of Kirkville; three sisters, Emma and Michelina, of Italy, and Beatrice of Buenos Aires, Argentina; two brothers, Nicola and Anthony Zurro of Italy; three grandchildren, Joseph, Jenna Marie and Abigail Rose; and one great-granddaughter, Eva. He was predeceased by his parents, Leone and Maria (Marrano) Zurro. Funeral Services: 8:30 a.m. Monday at Forani & Cline Funeral Home and 9 a.m. in St. Matthew's Church. Dear Genevieve, Joe and Leon and your families. I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Joe, Sr. Also that I did not find out until this morning (Thurs. 8/20). Richard and I would have been there and regret missing the opportunity to pay our last respects to your husband and Dad.

We were saddened to hear the news of "Uncle Joe's" passing. We all have very fond memories of our times together here in Ottawa. Those we will cherish forever. Our father did not have any relatives here and I remember that he was always thrilled when he knew that his cousin was coming to visit. The'll now be able to have many chats together...
