Thomas, Mr. Joseph "Joe" 86, of Chicago, IL was received into God's eternal kingdom on Friday, April 16, 2010. He was born in Arkansas and moved to Chicago as a young man where he met and subsequently married Elizabeth Kendricks in 1961. He had a long career with the YMCA on Chicago's north side. He was a member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church at the time of his death. He devoted his time to his family, friends, and helping others. He was known for his broad smile and quick wit. He enjoyed sports, especially boxing, cooking, and a competitive game of checkers. He was a friend to all and always had a word of encouragement. Until physically unable, he looked after the elderly, visited the sick, and did whatever he could for whoever was in need. He lived an active, full life until the end. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth, parents, sister Mary Lou and brothers, Mack and John Henry Thomas. He leaves to cherish his memory sons, Joe Jr., Ervin William, Cleveland Clifford (Bredetta) and William Ervin Kendricks of Chicago, IL, Joel Maurice Thomas of Memphis, TN, and daughters, Juanita Skipper (deceased), Margaret (John) Palmer of Kansas City, MO, Grace Elizabeth (Johnny) Wright, Lillian Mae Scruggs, Claretta (Eddie) Jones, and Rita Ronta (Jim) Culbreath of Chicago, IL, and Dr. Josephine (Joseph) Hamilton of Columbus, OH, and a number of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Viewing Wednesday, April 21, 2010, 11:30 to 12:30, service at 12:30, at Taylor Funeral Home, 63 East 79th Street, Chicago, IL 60619.
