Dr. Slade operated on my left pinky finger over 13 years ago. It was an incredibly bad break and if it weren't for his tireless work and expertise I never would have gotten the use of my pinky finger back. I am devastated to learn he is dead. My condolences to him, his colleagues, and family.

I was missing Dr. Slade's good spirit the other day, and looked him up on the internet to try and reconnect, only to be shocked by his passing ... I am one of his patients who thrives today because of his exceptional skills ... I almost lost the use of my thumb and index finger in a fishing accident, but as w/all Dr. Slade's testimonials, he put me back together good as new ... all I can say is, "Thanks, Doc, for making me whole again ... your healing spirit is with all of us ... always!"

Dr Slade was an amazing man. He did many facial surgeries on me when I had cancer. He was so sweet and caring. He even sang to me while doing surgery. I will never forget him and all he did for me. I Was sad when he left Gastonia, NC. and even sadder that he is gone. Rest in peace, Dr Slade. You are loved and missed.

It was such a shock today to see Dr. Slade's obituary on-line! Today, our son, Alan Solano, had an article in the paper about him and how he enjoys playing the bass guitar despite being born with extreme hand deformities (complex bilateral brachysyndactyly). Dr. Slade made his hands usable by performing 4 surgeries on him before he was 2 or 3, amazing work. Alan only had one more surgery, when he was 10, to help one hand have more grip, something Dr. Slade had told us may occur as he grew up. Alan gave Dr. Slade credit in the newspaper, although they didn't use his name in the article, for helping him use his hands so well -- he doesn't consider it a disability. I went on-line to find Dr. Slade to e-mail him the article when I found instead that he had passed at such a young age. What a shock - I physically felt it! I would like the family to contact me if possible. I'd like to send them the article. I might send it to Yale as a memorial to him. Dr. Slade was so touched by the results of his surgeries on Alan's hands. I remember when Alan picked up a Rice Krispy in his hand after one of the surgeries and Dr. Slade began to tear up, but I'm not sure he knew we noticed. His heart was definitely over-the-top for the vocation he loved. He told us how he didn't like doing the other surgeries the military required of him (knees and such), that he wanted to only work on hands. That was at Keesler AFB, MS in the late 1980's. Alan was born about 2 months before Dr. Slade arrived on-base and we always counted him a miracle from God, sent to take care of our son. The Air Force had only 2 hand microsurgeons at the time, and Dr. Slade came to bless our lives in August 1987. I was so proud to read about his accomplishments on-line off and on through the years. This world is better, and so many lives are better, by having had Dr. Joseph Slade here. My deepest condolences to his entire family and friends, and particularly his fiance and children. May God give your hearts peace in that his was a life well-spent and his heart surely was in the right place. If it is possible and you so desire, please e-mail me; I would like to forward this article. Dr. Slade holds a special, irreplacable place in our hearts through the blessings God used him for in our lives, but we failed to keep in touch through the years. I contacted him once when we lived in Dallas, TX area and found we had just missed him as he had attended some event there and asked that we send him updated photos of Alan's hands if we could, regrettably something we never got around to doing, since we didn't have the tools at the time. God bless you, and continue to heal your hearts! You will be in my prayers

We think of Dr. Joe so often and miss him terribly. Those who knew him were truly blessed by his knowledge, skill, warmth and compassion. Dr. Joe offered the security we so desperately need when we are hurt or injured. Most specialists don't have a clue, but Dr. Joe knew just what to say and do. We can't drive by Goose Lane without waving to him and remembering. We will always keep him and his family in our hearts and in our prayers.

Thank you, Dr. Slade for being a really talented surgeon and a wonderful person to deal with. I drove a couple of hours from NJ to your office with broken wrist bone, and with a warm smile on your face, you just said "Sure, I can fix that" - and you did, with barely a scar to show for it.

I just learned today about Dr. Slade's passing. I would like to extend my condolences to his family. I also lost a son when he was 49 years old. Children should not go before their parents. I first met Dr. Slade in 2008 when I had an elbow surgery. During my recovery I lost my husband. When I told Dr. Slade, he was very compassionate and held my hand. I will never forget how gentle a man that he was.

We would like to extend our most sincere condolences to The Slade Family. We first meet Dr. Slade when our daughter Cecilia was eight months old she was born with a non functional thumb that was attached to her index finger. We were told by numerous doctor's that they would not be able to help us but, that there was one doctor that would be able to perform such an extensive surgery. After our first meeting with Dr. Slade we were reassured that our daughter will have a functioning thumb but that it will a long road of surgeries, we have to have faith in the end result. Cecilia's reconstructive surgery started when she was a year old and that's when our relationship became more than "just our surgeon" -We loved him and Cecilia adored him the two of them had a special relationship. She is five years old today her last surgery was several months ago, Her thumb is beautiful it's where it's supposed to be and it is functioning. We are so thankful & blessed to have known him and we will miss him dearly. He was a wonderful person who changed our lives and especially the quality of our daughters for that we can't thank him enough.

I was a resident under Joe for 5 years from 1999-2004. He was a true inspiration to me. He never turned away any patient regardless of the complexity of the case or the finances. He was a true hero!

I called to make a follow-up appointment with Dr. Slade yesterday and was so shocked to hear about his passing. My heart is saddened by the loss of this wonderful doctor. He performed surgery on my wrist (due to torn ligaments) back in Dec 2009. Dr. Slade was an awesome doctor. He was there to answer my many questions and took such good care of me before and after surgery. Thank you Dr. Slade and God bless you!! I will surely miss you! My deepest condolences to your family. I know how hard it is. My daughter Kristy passed away in June of 2007. God bless you both!!

I was referred to Dr. Slade by the emergency room doctors after breaking one of the bones in my hand in an accident.. Wow, what a wonderful man who gave you the confidence that everything would be allright. I had two operations on that hand and I still can't see where the incisions were. When my wife needed surgery he was there with the solution. We became casual friends and shared one of his fine bottles of champagne on our deck. I just called to have a follow up and was given the devestating news.
He was our special doctor and friend that could fix anything that was wrong with your hands, as well as heal your spirit. What a kind and sensitive human being. So many professional in the medical field could learn from the example he set. Our condolences to his special family, I can't imagine your sense of loss if his death has affected us as profoundly as it has. God bless you!

My wife and I were both patients of Joe Slade. We were among his last patients. He was recommended to us by Doctor Jupiter the head of hand surgery at Mass General. When we told this to Dr. Slade he asked why we weren't using Dr. Jupiter, he was the best.
Dr. Slade, nobody could be compared to you. You were the one who set the standard by which all others could be measured but none could hope to obtain.
The warmth of your personality, your wisdom, assurance and surgical ability is a great loss. We will miss you.

Dr. Slade was my surgeon for over 9 years and without his expertise I would have lost my hand. He was more than a dedicated doctor to me. He was a friend. I deeply miss him and he is always in my prayers.

I was referred to Dr. Slade for his opinion on how to repair a difficult little finger non-fusion. My husband and I liked him immediately as a warm, friendly and helpful doctor. He assured me he could improve my finger and help me which he did. Since then he performed other finger and elbow surgeries on me. I was scheduled to see him for a follow-up in June. We were shocked to hear of his loss and personally saddened. We loved talking with him, sharing life's challenges and hearing him fondly and proudly tell us about his sons' school and work accomplishments. His humor always made office visits fun and surgery less burdensome. Our hearts go out to his family. We feel we have lost a good friend and valued doctor. Anna and Mark Mergen (Mount Kisco, NY)

I had the privilege of being referred to Dr. Slade in June 2009 because of his expertise with my injury. What a down to earth man he was making me feel less worried and more confident about me. I knew i was in very good hands. A very down to earth manas well as compassionate and warm hearted, qualities that are hard to find today. Knowing how concerned my husband and i were about my upcoming skin grapht,he was in England and waited up after 2:oo a.m. to call us at our time 7:00 to 7:30 to try and calmus down and let me know what he would be doing and that i would be fine and i was not to worry. I was so amazed by his concern for our feelings I am still in shock. You are all in my thoughts and prayers

To Joey, Andy and Alma:
I'm so sad about this. I've thought a lot about Joe through the years - and about you three. I have some very good memories of us all squeezing into his car, heading to a restaurant and ordering one of everything on the menu. With Joe, it was always 'you want it? you got it. no problem.'
Once as a teenager in New York after a play, I stood in awe of the limos picking up other big city patrons. That was nothing, he said, and headed out into the street to flag us down one.
And he was funny. I remember him telling a story of how he had found a racoon in his kitchen cupboard. He said that as he opened the cupboard door, he thought:'hmm. I don't remember putting my fur coat in there.'
Joe, Joey, Andy and Alma - I feel really lucky to have spent time with you.
I wish you so much strength. What a great loss.

I was stunned to learn of Joe’s death. We became friends our senior year of high school and stayed in close touch in the years before he returned to southern Connecticut, as his education and career took him to Boston, New York, Miami, Durham, Erie, Biloxi, and Gastonia. (I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few places.). He was a great and loyal friend, and I always marveled at his vitality, dedication, and creative energy. It was gratifying to read the tributes to his skill as a surgeon and warmth as a person; to see that his remarkable qualities were appreciated by so many people. My deepest sympathy to his wonderful mother, Alma, and the rest of his family.

I was very sad to hear of Dr. Slade's passing. 7 years ago, on her 6th birthday, my daughter broke her arm. We rushed her to Yale where Dr. Slade ended up being on call. He came in and operated on our daughter. He was a great surgen but even a better person. When I told her of his passing she remembered him even though we hadn't seen him in years. She said "Barney"? as she remembered that's what he called himself when he wore the purple scrubs. God Bless.

We are old friends of Joe from the Duke Orthopedic Surgery Residency program back in 1981-84. Joe was one year behind us and became one of our best friends at Duke. When our first child was born at Duke Hospital, Joe was one of the first visitors. He came to our house and cooked us dinner to celebrate (his famous Beef Stroganoff). He promptly gave our baby son a nickname and a baseball cap with the name on it. Joe was generous, warm, funny, energetic and bright, and a very good friend. We loved Joe and send you our deepest sympathy. Though we are shaken by his passing, we know his spirit will live on, in his work, in his family and in his friends. We feel grateful to have known Joe and to have him touch our lives. Pam and David Kyzer MD

It was with great sadness that I learned of Joe's passing. Dr. Slade was a great teacher and friend to me providing guidance, advice and assistance in orthopaedics and in life. I will dearly miss him.
I take some solace in knowing that Joe loved every bit of what he was doing each day: taking care of patients in the office, doing surgery, teaching surgery and traveling the world to share his ideas. Of course his greatest love and pride was his boys (even in their younger days when he was wont to interupt his phone conversations to shout out "Stop it Joey and Andrew").
God bless you, Joe.

To the loved ones of Dr. Slade. When I came to him I was in a lot of pain. His knowledge, skill and confidence in his ability to heal me was a God send. In his waiting room I met many other patients of his who felt the same way. But I also learned that not only did he heal his patients, he even went over seas to teach people all around the world. How blessed we were to have him. I wish there was a way I could do for you what Dr. Slade did for me and take away YOUR pain. All I can say is God bless you and I'll never forget Dr. Slade and his fun and casual way he kidded around with me after the surgery. He was one of a kind and he'll never be forgotten. I wish each and every one of his family, friends and loved one's the very best and I'll be praying that your pain will be replaced with fond memories of a nice and truly good man who made a big difference in the world.

In Sept. 2000, our four year old son fell and broke off a piece of his elbow. When we received the bad news at YNHH that evening, we were also told that because there was no pediatric orthopedist on call, our child might have to wait until the next day for surgery. However, the pediatricians called around, and Dr. Slade agreed to come in and repair the elbow, even though he had no obligation to do so. He was a wonderful, generous and caring man, he did a beautiful job repairing our son's arm, and we will always be grateful to him.

What a great loss to the discipline and camaraderie of hand surgery. Dr. Slade's warmth and good humor only punctuated his magical ability to place one, if not two, screws in a funny little bone by almost feel alone. A Mac nut and a wizard of many things, Joe will be sorely missed.

Joe Slade was a wonderful person and physician. He took care of my family several times and we called him "the family man" since he always said to my father we are all family. As a colleague at Yale I could always count on Joe to fit in another patient who needed him. Joe will be dearly missed by all who were his friends and his patients. I am sure his soul will shine on all.

Dr. Slade was a mentor and friend to me during my training in hand surgery at Yale this academic year. He was always thrilled to have me scrub in on his cases at Temple so that he could show me his famous techniques. It is such a tragedy to lose someone of his caliber in the field of hand surgery. His legacy will definitely live on in his many publications and contributions to the field.
Thank you, Dr. Slade, and may God be with you!
