Our deepest sympathy to the entire Schaeffer family. I learned about baseball and life during the four years I played on the Tigers for Mr. Schaeffer (1961-1964). Joe was a great teacher of the game. He would call me "Butterball." I still remember him chewing on a peach pit during the games. After moving in 1966, Mary and I returned to St. Genevieve's church in 1979 for our wedding. After all the years that passed, to our surprise Mr & Mrs. Schaeffer were there to greet us after the ceremony. Their attendance was very much appreciated. Joe will be missed, but never forgotten. May God bless the Schaeffer Family.

Uncle Joe, the family won't be the same without you. I know Mom and all of the in-laws and the outlaws were there to welcome you. You and Aunt Flo were our models, I hope we made you happy. Who is "couple a three runs" going to talk college basketball to and who is going to be the "knee squeezer" now? We miss you already.

With sincere respect and sympathy for Mrs. Schaeffer and the entire Schaeffer family, I was deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Schaeffer's passing. Our families shared many happy times when I was growing up. In my mother's final years, she always looked forward to Mrs. Schaeffer's visits and was grateful for "her driver", Mr. Schaeffer.
I also hold fond memories of my little league days due to Mr. Schaeffer, as my manager, and later as a colleague. My dad would always remind me that every year was "Joe's last year" coaching little league.
He was always a gentleman. I held the deepest respect for his demeanor, on and off the baseball field. I never once heard him utter an inappropriate word, not even when I "stepped into the bucket" for an entire season. His values and standards will always remain with me. May God's presence comfort Mrs. Schaeffer and her family, during this very difficult time.
With deepest sympathy,
Randy Peluso

Dear Uncle Joe,
There haven't been many people in my life who could keep me "in line". All it ever took from you, though, was a glance. It wasn't until I reached adulthood that I realized you were all (well, mostly) bark and no bite. That knowledge never detracted from my respect for you. My "fear" of you never diminished the love I had for you. Remembering the times spent on W. Parker comprise some of my most precious memories. Thank you, Uncle Joe, for everything. Rest in peace.
Lovingly,
Maureen
