Joseph Malphrus Obituary

Ridgeland, SC - Joseph Nelson Malphrus, Sr. died Sunday, August 17, 2003. He was born October 3, 1927 in Ridgeland, SC, son of Mary Ann Woods and Clarence Ruth Malphrus, and brother to Mary Ruth Keene (deceased), David Malphrus of Ridgeland,SC, and Clifford Malphrus of Charleston, SC. He served in the Merchant Marines and Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was graduated from the University of South Carolina with Business Administration and Doctor of Law degrees. He distinguished himself academically in law school with awards in the area of Real Property Law, and practiced law in Jasper County for 40 years. He was a member of the Great Swamp Baptist Church, and was active in the Masonic Lodge, Jaycees, River Club, as well as the Jasper County and South Carolina Bar Associations. He also enjoyed farming, fishing, horseback riding, and he will be long remembered for his quick wit and forthright personality. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Ann Lowther. Survivors: Patricia Ellen Malphrus, her husband Andy Fishkind, and their daughter Sarah, of Bluffton, SC, Joseph Nelson Malphrus, Jr. of Ridgeland, SC, Deborah Ann Malphrus, and her husband William Fowler, and their children, Brann, Sara, and Andrew, all of Ridgeland, SC. Visitation: 10:00 a.m. until time of service at Great Swamp Baptist Church, Ridgeland, SC. Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at the Great Swamp Baptist Church, Ridgeland, SC.
