My sincere condolences to the Rogosich family.
As Victor and I are very old acquaintances, he became my barber when I first entered the shop, and I never had the opportunity to have a haircut by Jay. But I had the privilege and pleasure of sitting next to him in his shop for the last 10 years and enjoying the warmth and friendliness he exuded to all his customers. Jay was a special person - always smiling, always upbeat; as the man said, he was an Evanston institution. He had a welcoming presence that made one a customer of Jay's Barber Shop for life. And he was a great barber (they tell me). I will truly miss him. -- Rich Lucas, Evanston

When I left Bridgeport to attend Northwestern in 2003, I wanted to be reminded of home. Jay's Barber Shop offered me just that. Every time I walked in and sat in Jay's chair over the next four years, I always felt comfortable and knew the time I spent there would be well worth it.
When you were with Jay, you always had a great friend. The haircut was a bonus.
My condolences to the Rogosich family.

I was one of Jay's customers at the barber shop for the last 6 years. Jay was a great man, always cheerful and full of life and energy. We will miss him in Evanston. He was an institution and an inspiration. He always had a smile and a joke for us all
I will pray for Jeanette and his family and try to learn what he was here to teach me. We wish his family all the best

Jeanette, Cheri and My Dearest Johnny,
I am so sorry you have to endure this pain. Your husband and dad was a great guy. He will always be with you, right by your side to guide you always. I will be forever greatful for all the things he did for my sons, Joey and Vito. Jay was there PaPa and they have wonderful memories with him. He (and all of you) are angels. He had a contagious smile. My prayers are with you all.
Love you,

When I moved from E. Peoria to Evanston in order to teach at New Trier in 1964, I walked down the alley from my condo to start an association with "Jay" Rogosich. That relationship continued for almost 47 years at Jay's Barber Shop. It's extremely painful to think that relationship has ended.
Jay made appointments possible, he always had a big smile and cheery voice when I entered the door. I encourage many of my New Trier colleagues to know Jay, his sense of humor, his chatter about golf, baseball, and football.
Two years ago I petitioned our ward committeeman to grant an honorary naming of the street in front of the shop. I'll continue to do that in memory of Jay.
I'm sorry others have not known Jay as I have had over these years.
I plan to attend his service at St. Jerome Croatian Church to say a final goodbye to friend.

Jay...I have a few unanswered questions...
When I showed up ten minutes late to an appointment, how did you give me the same haircut?
Do I still owe Victor double or nothing for a haircut on the Cubs/Sox series?
How could you listen to my same stories for 35 years with a razor near by and not cut my throat?
I will miss you more than words can describe.
God Bless you my friend.

Back around 1970 I was bouncing back and forth between various barber shops looking for someone who wouldn't mangle the locks since I was going through a young teen's self conscious period of vanity---yet knew from the first time I sat in Jay's chair I'd found "My Barber"---For the next 40 years no one cut my hair except Jay...To say Jay didn't become an extended member of family would be a gross understatement. My grandfather was Jay's first landlord at his Maple St. location, and he'd go onto cut hair for 5 generations of my family...Jay's Barber Shop is an Evanston institution and this didn't happen by mere chance---Jay gave to the community in so many ways and developed a strong bond with all his customers---or better put--friends!---He was that special of a human being. God bless you Jay and rest in peace---I will miss you so very much...To the Rogosich family, please accept my sympathies during this difficult time and know my thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.

Dear Jeanette, Cherie and John,
Your father was one of the most loved person I ever knew. He will always remain in our memories and in our hearts, even though we will miss him very very much. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficutl time, but always remember HE LOVED YOU ALL MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF. I don't think you needed me to tell you that, but at times like this it may give extra comfort. I will miss him very much, and I will keep all of my fond memories in a special place in my heart.
My deepest sympathy
Love

Jay gave me my first flattop when I was a sophomore at Northwestern in 1987. I've been stuck with that haircut ever since (every time I try to grow it out, I get to the point where I can't take how it looks and I get it cut again)! I went to see Jay every time I was in town visiting my folks and I will miss him. He was a good man and a fixture of the Northwestern and Evanston communities, even if he took a long train ride to get there every day!

My heart goes out to you with the loss of your husband and father. As they say, God takes the "good ones" and he was definitely one of the "good ones"! We will miss his gentle smile but he lives on in his children and grandchildren.
With my deepest sympathy
