John D. Mackbach age 52, of Stratford, passed away Friday, October 1, 2021, in the St. Vincent's Medical Center, in Bridgeport surrounded by his loving family. John was born June 16, 1969, in Bridgeport and had been a lifelong Stratford resident. John was predeceased by his father Francis "Mac", mother Virginia (Fellows) Mackbach, and niece Rachel Shumyhora. John was a graduate of Stratford High School and was retired from Stop & Shop. He also served as an Easter Seals Ambassador for many years. He was a popular figure around town known as the "Mayor of Stratford", an avid bingo player at Saint James Church, and a member of Knights of Columbus. John also volunteered and participated in many Baldwin Center and Special Olympics events as well as many local sports teams including the Brakettes and the Stony Brook Jaws. Survivors include his six brothers and sisters, Glenn Mackbach and his wife Victoria of Southbury, Paul Mackbach and his wife Deborah of Otis MA, Francis Mackbach and his wife Tania of Stratford, Debra Strong and her husband Thomas of Oxford, Susan Shumyhora and her husband Walter of Clearwater FL, and Dawn D'Angelo and her husband Salvatore of Trumbull, and his beloved nieces and nephews, Karisten, Brandon, Glenn Jr., Samantha, Andrew, Jason, Jessica, Jennifer, Dion, Justin, Heather, Ryan, Amber, Brittany, Oskar, Alexis, Tyler, Erica, Anthony, Marisa, Godson-Vincent, and Gianna; along with many great nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. by meeting directly in St. James Church, 2070 Main St, Stratford. Interment will follow in St. Michael Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday night October 5, 2021 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. (masks required) in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St., Stratford, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Special Olympics, http://give.specialolympics.org/Connecticut/match. John was always greeting me at Apple Rehab when I went to visit my mother , John would always buy my mom her favorite soda (root beer) and we would sit and have lunch with him. We also treated John to a couple of pizza dinners. I will miss him so much , my condolences to your family
