Kelly, John Robert
With deep sadness, we share the passing of John Robert Kelly, 74, a lifelong Chicagoan, who
died early Monday morning July 15th, after a brief illness. John was a force to be reckoned with
and a man who lived life to the fullest. He left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Born and raised in the heart of Beverly, John's roots ran deep in the South Side of Chicago.
Though a graduate of St. Ignatius and Loras College, John was a self-made man who brought
street smarts to the business world. He wasted no time making his mark, embarking on a
successful journey right out of college.
John dove in headfirst, starting Mobile Space in 1978 - providing essential mobile offices for
construction sites. He sold the company in 2004 and went into real estate, developing scores of
building and conversion projects in several states. He also purchased racehorses, becoming an
owner of the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom.
John was the center of every room he entered, known for his boisterous personality, wicked
sense of humor, and ability to captivate any audience. He was no saint, and he wouldn't have it
any other way. John lived on his own terms - quick-witted, nimble, and comfortable in his own
skin. Whether at Piccolo Sogno, Salerno's, Ridge Country Club, or The Matchbox, John loved to
hold court and share his infectious energy.
John's legacy will endure via the countless lives he touched. He was a big man with a big heart.
John was a father, husband, brother, and friend to so many. We will miss his robust presence,
his unwavering loyalty, and his ability to make us laugh, even in our darkest moments.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held at The Ridge Country Club, 10522 S California
Ave, Chicago, IL 60655, on Thursday, July 18th from 6:30-7:30 PM, followed by a toast to John
and refreshments. We hope you'll join us in honoring the memory of this remarkable man.
He is survived by his former wife, Michaelene Kelly, his devoted children, Mike, Phil (Maria
Dunlap), Laura and John, his six siblings, Kevin, Mark, Ray Ann, Mary Kay, Roger, and Meg,
and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
With love and gratitude,
The Kelly Family.
