John Hanlin Obituary

John Joseph Hanlin died on Friday, May 27th, in Worcester, Mass. John was born in Erie, Pa., on October 22nd, 1955, the fourth child and second of three sons to Patrick Morton Hanlin and Mary Elizabeth Hanlin (Minnaugh).

John attended St. Luke School and graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School in 1974. He went on to attend Behrend College and graduated from Penn State University main campus in 1978, with a degree in electrical engineering.

He was hired by Raytheon Corporation right out of college and moved to the Boston, Mass. area. John had a very successful, 38-year career working with microwave technology for Raytheon. He was called an "engineer's engineer," known for his accurate and detailed work. Per his boss, he was the expert and go-to guy in certain areas of microwave technology and didn't make mistakes.

John loved bicycling and once did a solo bike ride from Boston to Erie, a distance of 560 miles, in six days. He greatly enjoyed music and was a New England Patriots fan, but he most enjoyed spending time with his seven brothers and sisters and their spouses and hearing how his nieces and nephews were progressing in life.

John fought multiple myeloma cancer courageously for over ten years, often working when he should have taken time off. In his last days, John accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and is now in heaven with his mom and dad. John will be greatly missed by all who knew him for his intellect, dry dense of humor and kindness.

John is survived by two brothers and five sisters, Pat and his wife, Nancy (Johnson), of Erie, Maureen Webster and her husband, Doug, from Ohio, Kathy Ferarre and her husband, Bill, from Erie, Sharie Sullivan and her husband, Tim, from Edinboro, Annie Dean and her husband, Brian, from North Carolina, Mary Redfern and her husband, Troy, from Texas, and Denny and his wife, Pattie, from Erie, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In memory of John, the family would suggest contributing to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation or the Rose Monahan Hospice Home - 10 Judith Road Worcester, MA 01602.

There will be a small memorial gathering, for immediate family only, on the July 4th weekend.

I too was (luckily) tossed into a cubicle with John when I was first hired at Raytheon in Wayland and we hit it off from the start talking about technology. And between him, John Francis and myself we had, I'm sure, the most "manhours per cubicle" each week with his extraordinary dedication. Always a kind and gentle personality, intelligence without ego, a great role model, he is greatly missed already... My prayers go out to his family for their loss.

John was one of the first engineers I met when I joined Raytheon 34 years ago. I shared an office with John for many years and worked with him on a variety of projects. Simply put John was the finest engineer I have ever known. But more importantly John was an exceptionally good man who treated everyone with kindness, decency, and respect. His death is a tremendous loss to all who knew him.

I worked with John in the Microwave Dept of Raytheon in Wayland MA. He was known as the Engineer that always did the analysis or design right and it was checked and double checked. John was always stoic. A man of few words however, he could tell you with a look that your request or direction did not have merit. Very sad to hear of his passing.

John and I were the new hires in the Antenna group back in the Summer of 1978. I got to know and work with him numerous times. Besides being a talented and dedicated engineer, he was one of the finest person's I've had the privilege to know. My sincere condolences to his family.

I shared an office with John early in my career, and was impressed by his knowledge, dedication and attention to details. He was always willing to help, and had a great attitude. I'm glad he's in heaven now, although he'll be missed here.

John will be remembered as one of the most meticulous and gentle engineers at Raytheon. His expertise includes not only antenna/microwave design, but also 3-dimensional sketching/drawing, and component/antenna testing. He has made major contributions to many of Raytheon's programs, also helped mentor many younger engineers.

This is a big loss to the family and the company. My deepest condolence. We will all miss him.
