I was touched by the Tribune notice of Mr. Dowdle's passing. He was a friend of my late father, Kenneth Powless, from the Ramona Stone days. I will always be indebted to Mr. Dowdle for my first job. He gave my father the name of the only person he knew in Chicago advertising, Dodie Enright. This contact led to a 25+ year career. As I read of the kindness and generosity he extended to so many throughout his life, it put his favor granted to an old friend in context for me. The men are few these days who can fill the shoes of our fathers. My sympathy to the entire, extended Dowdle family.

though i have never had the honor to meet John Dowdle, I have met a number of family and friends. It is obvious, from the closeness of the people he's touched in his lifetime, that he was truly man that stood apart and lived a magnificent life that will continue to flow through those he's affected with his magnificence.
God bless.

To the Dowdle family: I want to share with you how truly honored I feel to have known your husband, your father, & your grandfather. In the short time that I knew him it was obvious to me that he was an amazing man, who did amazing things like creating such wonderful people like you all.
Julie I admire you, especially for your strength.
My prayers are with you all. With Love Annette.

Although I met Mr. Dowdle only a few times, I could tell he was a special person. The love that your family shares for each other is evident. That is his gift and his legacy. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Dear Kevin, Please pass on my expression of sympathy to your family. I had every intention of getting to your dad'swake on Sunday evening. Unfortunately my Confirmation ceremony went too long and I could not make it up north from the far south part of the ardcdiocese in time. May God reward you all with peace and consolation. Your dad was very good to me at Charities as he was to everyone he met. I shall remember him and all of you at Mass on Monday. Bishop Edwin Conway P.O.1979 60690

Dear Julie and all the Dowdles, I was honored to have worked with John in the EF Hutton office in the Board of Trade for many years. I was also priveledged to play golf with John many times. I'm also proud to say I never beat him (or Julie) but I sure had fun trying.. John, the broker's broker, was always, in many ways, a GENTLEman. Heaven is now a brighter spot because of his presence.. Thank you all for remembering my father. He taught us how to give to others. To share our strengths and gifts and to expect nothing in return. That our reward was not here on earth but with our Lord. He walked the walk and talked the talk. He lived by the prayer: May those who hunger have bread, and may we who have bread always hunger for justice and peace. He loved life but his peaceful death and his great faith gives us some comfort. I could go on and on but I will not. He would love nothing more than for all of us to pick up a rosary and pray for someone less fortunate. I pray for all of you as I know you pray for us.
God Bless.

Dear Julia and family, Your husband and father's death is sad for everyone, very difficult to accept, but we must in God's mercy.
Though a distant cousin to you (you great-grandmother was also mine)I have followed the McGuire family through weal and woe, being a patient as a child of the doctors, and living not so very far from you, and even teaching some one of you in Sr. Mark's Latin class. I silently shared in your happiness and in your grief as I endured much of the same in my eighty-nine years. I hope you will accept my sympathy and prayers for John and your family at this difficult time, Sincerely,Anita Carroll
