John was born and raised in Vermillion, South Dakota, where he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of South Dakota in Math. He later moved to Chicago where he began teaching and soon met and won the heart of Jean Lennon (Barstow), marrying her June 21, 1969. The two shared six decades of marital bliss together, before her passing in May of 2018. During their time together John and Jean traveled all over the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom and Central America. John later went on to graduate school, obtaining his Masters in Learning Disabilities at Eastern Illinois University. He had many friends who he'd made over the years, maintaining his friendships from home along the way. John is survived by his sister, Mary Pat Stone of Des Moines Iowa, her children Veronica Rhiner and Benjamin Stone of Urbandale, Iowa and their families Rodney Rhiner, Trevor Rhiner and Shelby Rhiner; Karim Stone and Brianna Stone.

So sad to hear of John's death... He was a friend and colleague whose humor and camaraderie helped make teaching in District 219 bearable.
