Joe Esposito Obituary

Elvis Presley's close friend and road manager Joe Esposito has died, according to The Associated Press. He was 78.

Esposito's daughter, Cindy Bahr, told The Associated Press Tuesday that he had dementia and died Nov. 23 of natural causes in Calabasas, California.

Esposito met Elvis when they were both serving in the Army in 1959. They became lifelong friends. After their military service, Esposito became the King’s personal assistant, bodyguard, and road manager when Elvis was on tour.

He enjoyed making appearances at Elvis conventions around the world. He loved greeting fans, taking pictures, and talking about his friend Elvis.

“I handled almost every detail surrounding his personal needs during the movie years, the Vegas years, and the touring years,” he recalled in his 1994 memoir, "Good Rockin’ Tonight." “I even made flight and hotel arrangements for all of Elvis’ girlfriends, which would be a challenge to anyone’s organizational skills.”

Esposito was one of two best men at Presley's wedding to Priscilla Presley in 1967, and he was one of the pallbearer’s at his funeral.

After Presley's death, Esposito went to work for Jerry Weintraub and became road manager for the Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, and John Denver.

Along with Bahr, Esposito is survived by his son, Anthony; a brother; a sister; and three grandchildren.

I've enjoyed so much reading Joe's books re: his life with Elvis. How sad it is that only Billy Smith, the only original member of the Memphis Mafia and Elvis' cousin, is left. (See all the King's Men's videos.) Jerry Schilling came later.

A very big fan..

To Mr Esposito,

Although we never had the chance to meet, I can safely say, you were one of the most genuine friends Elvis ever had, even after Elvis passed away. I never heard you ever once talk poorly of Elvis, when he was alive and even after his death.

Joe, you were a man of integrity, loyalty and kindness. If more people had your kindness, the world would be a better place. Although we never met, I know we would have connected well and would have lots to discuss.

Many thanks to you for being you, your kindness to us and for never talking poorly of Elvis. Bless you, sir. RIP, Joe and Elvis: old friends reunited at last.

Your fan,
Alex

I met Joe back in 1995. He was a special guest in Collingwood Ontario at the Elvis festival. When I heard he was going to be there, I wanted to make sure that I got to talk to him. At the time I was 28, and when I saw him, I froze. I knew that this is the closest I will ever get to Elvis, was meeting joe. I told him how I lost my father in an accident in July 1977 at the same age as Elvis (who died a month later) I told him how my dad had me watching Elvis movies as a child and how I felt lost when my dad and Elvis died. Joe was amazed at my story and we became close throughout the Elvis festival. Our families also originated from Calabria Italy. It seemed we had so much to talk about and never shut me away. Two years later, we connected in Memphis again durning Elvis week. He remembered me and the great time we had in Collingwood. We even went to Marlowes and sat together for dinner. A dream come true for me. I will always remember Joe( he made us Italians proud) being the closest person to Elvis, right to the very end. Thank God I have these nice memories and pictures that I took with Diamond Joe. I miss you Joe and thanks for the memories, we all know that you are taking care of Elvis in heaven

Don't know if you remember me, but I went to St. Timothy's with you back in the early 70's, my father Frank Haefeli, who also passed away recently (January this year) use to own Picolo's. My mom Ruth (passed in 2000) also knew your mom and I spent some time after school at your house in Beverlywood. I hope you and your families are well, and again sorry for the passing of your dad.

I am so saddened to hear about Joes crossing over. First of all my condolences to his family, I am so deeply sorry for your loss and I hope knowing that its only a temporary separation will provide some small comfort at this time. I can only imagine what Diamond Joe & Elvis are up to at Paradise Hotel, no doubt running the show with Martha by his side. :) I had the unique opportunity of meeting Joe at Westlake studios through a mutual artist friend. It was cool because there in one room was a gathering of some of Elvis's finest posse members, musicians and singers including Ray Walker who was also very kind. It was a historic and surreal experience. Joe radiated charisma and warmth. I remember later sitting with Joe in the studio's kitchen eating pizza, it was just us, he was quiet with his head sort of bowed and thinking, I sensed a sadness in him, I said 'You miss your friend don't you?' he said 'Yes, everyday', it was a very personal moment. We chatted for awhile. And we got to know each other, he was supportive of me as an artist and had wanted to work together which was an honor. God bless you Joe, I enjoyed spending time with you and the rest of the crew, I will never forget it. Thank you for your generosity and guidance. You touched many lives and left the world a better place. May the good Lord keep you and your family always.
You will always be a Diamond.

I offer my sincere condolences to the family for their loss. As a loyal Elvis fan since the age of 8 years old, it was one of my greatest pleasures in life to meet Joe in September 1991 in El Dorado Hills. It was not hard to see why Elvis formed such a strong bond with Joe as I found him to be a very gracious and engaging man. I spoke to Joe several times since that day at various Elvis related events (2 auctions and a book signing) and he was always very kind.

My heart goes out to the family at this time.

My wife and I were standing in line at the Wynn buffet some years ago. As we got to the front of the line, a gentleman who appeared to be working for the Wynn turned and smiled warmly at us. I immediately knew that it was Joe Esposito, Elvis' former manager. He was busy so I didn't try to engage him in even a small conversation. That's one of the standout moments in my life! Almost as good as coming face to face with the King himself.

I did not know Mr. Esposito, personally. But anyone can tell he must have been an incredible individual! Although I'm certain he loved his work, it still had to be a massive challenge to handle all of the details of Elvis' personal, and business life.
