I was a childhood friend of JoAnn's. I have not seen her in over 20 years, but over these years memories of her would pop in my head. She gave me some of the best laughs of my life. She was a blast! My mother just passed away last week and Kathie responded to her guestbook. I was shocked to hear the news about JoAnn. Though she lived a short life, it is clear from her obituary and this guestbook that she was loved very much and loved very much. I was blessed that we crossed paths in this life. I will keep JoAnn and her entire family in my prayers.

To the entire Stark Family:
My heart goes out to all of you. Although it's been a long time since grade school I have many fond memories spent with JoAnn. It was such a good feeling to see her at the reunion 4 years ago. She was truly one of the GOOD ONES and will be deeply missed by all who knew her and whose lives she touched. God Bless to all of you with my deepest sympathy.

To one of the most special families that I know:
Mary Claire- You are the sweetest little girl and one of the apples of your mom's eye! She is now your special angel watching over you! I love you!
Miss Riley
Kayleigh- What can I say to you? We have laughed together and cried together. I hope that we have many more wonderful times together. I guess that through Girl Scouts I'm stuck with you, huh? Only kidding! You have your mom's sense of humor, except that she never imitated me (I think you know what I mean)! You always know where to find me and I love seeing you every day. I love you!
Miss Riley
P.S. I loved your solar sytem story!
John- I don't know what to say. Words cannot express the loss that JoAnn's passing will mean to St. Cornelius and to Girl Scouts. She is a special soul. May God guide you as you raise the girls.

Dear Stark family,
I give you my deepest sympathy to you all. JoAnn had so much fun and grace in everything she did. No matter how angry you were at something she always knew of a way to make a smile on your face. Not everyone had the same qualities like JoAnn she was unique. She just had something about her that made you get a feeling like you knew her all of your life. I know for a fact that JoAnn is one of the best examples to live life. To live it like your last. You should be proud.

Dear john, Kayliegh, and Marie Claire
we will never forget JoAnn. I think about her a lot and the fight that she put up in order to survive. The few common qualitys about JoAnn is that when she walked into the room this smile of hers just spread everywhere when it spread it attracted everyone to her. To meet her and to see what she is like. And i know that you Kayliegh and Marie Claire will take that quality and show it to everyone and say " I got that from my mom."

John, Kayleigh, Mary Claire,
I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and genersoity that was displayed by the hundreds of people last week.
I have heard it said in the past that you get what you have given. That could not have been more obvious this week. JoAnn never asked for anything, and gave everything. It was our final opportunity to show her our gratitude for all of the unselfish love and kindness she gave to each and every one of us for so many years.
Thank you for sharing her with us, and for allowing us to be blessed with the many gifts she had to offer.
With love,

Dear John, I had the great honor of spending time with JoAnne only once- nearly ten years ago during our visit to Chicago. I recall being truly amazed at how nuturing she was to Kayleigh. Not having children at the time I was awed by the way she made managing motherhood and a career at the same time look so simple and fun. Most of all I remember her kindness, she made me feel as if I had known her forever. When I hear about the strength and courage she showed to the end I am ashamed of my own downfall of taking things for granted. Remembering her strength and spirit will help me to be not only a better wife, daughter, and friend, but thinking of her will most importantly help me be a better mother. As I raise a little girl who lost her mother I can assure you they never forget, the heart has plenty of room for memories. In my thoughts- Laurie Hein

Dear Kathie and Family,
It has been a long time since we last talked. Keeping a close contact just never happened but, you were thought of over the years. My heart is torn at your loss. Losing a child has to be completely devastating. Not to mention a sister, wife, mother and friend. God bless Joann and God bless her children. I know it will be a long time in healing.

John: My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I couldn't begin to imagine what you must be going through, and what an incredible difficult time this has to be.
I have always admired Joann for being such a "Super Mom". Joann made me want to be a better mother, person, friend, the list is endless. I regret never telling her this before. She was such an amazing woman. I feel lucky for knowing her, and I know Ashley feels the same way.
We are deeply saddend by this, and we will miss seeing her smiling face.

Dear John MC and Kayleigh,
i want you to know that i love you guys so much. It brings tears to my eyes to see you in pain. You are so important to me. To kayleigh: I hope that you will still keep that same beautiful smile and great sense of humor just like your mom had. To MC: I hope that you can still come to me and be just as talkative as your mommy was. To both of you: I hope that you know that i will always be there for you, through the good and the bad and you can always call me your big sister. To John: i hope that you can still keep that same glow about you as you have had since the first day that i met you. I am willing to help you out in anyway i can, i am only a phone call away. Finally to JoJo:I want to thank you for making me laugh. I loved the way you called me leesie and when you called on the phone you would always ask for my mommoo. You made this world a much better place to live in, you have shown me how to be proud of who i am.You taught me how to smile so everyone around you will smile to, But most of all you taught me that it is what is on the inside that counts, to count your blessings, and to live every moment as if it was your last. I will miss you.
Love always,
Leesie

The obituary read "best friend to all that knew her," and that's for sure! I am so heartbroken to hear of JoAnn's passing. I worked with her for a couple of years in the same school, in the room next to her for one of those years. There was never a time when she did not display enthusiasm, the most exuberant imagination and the utmost patience, even with the most difficult students. We were pregnant at the same time, and she always spoke so adoringly of her beautiful little girls and her husband. She bubbled over with such excitement about what projects she was looking forward to doing with her daughters (she always had such good ideas!), and what a wonderful, handsome, supportive guy she had at her side. I would also like to say that she was incredibly beautiful, with such a cheerful, saucy smile, the cutest nose ever and hair that I think Marilyn Monroe would have envied. The thing that made her the most beautiful, though, was her brave, brave spirit, even when things were so hard. I am so proud of her for making it through the holidays, just another example of the will she had when it came to giving to the children she loved. It is a devastating loss but what a wonderful blessing that so many people were touched by this life! She has left an incredible legacy of generosity and good humor, and if anyone in the world would watch over her children in spirit, it would be Joann. This is a terrible time and such a tragedy, it just doesn't even seem like the same world wityhout JoAnn in it, but I pray that the resonating presence JoAnn had in the world will echo through the Stark and O"Malley families, and that you will find her still in the world for you by way of the things and people she loved, and peaceful memories.
Deepest condolences.

John, Kayleigh, Mary Claire, and all who knew and loved JoAnn,
There was never a time that JoAnn couldn't make you laugh or smile. She was always "up", and exuded that feeling to all those around her.
I'll always remember her willingness to help, especially early last year when she and I spent almost an hour on the phone swapping ideas about both of our upcoming school auctions. Her ideas prompted me to make some last-minute changes in our auction... Definitely for the better!
The Halloween parties were the best parties ever. Even though we missed the last two, Carol and I still remember every single one of them, and always will.
I knew JoAnn for nearly twenty years, and her relationship with John was one of the greatest stories of love, friendship, and generosity there will ever be. They passed those gifts on through the years to their friends and family, and raised their children to follow their example.
JoAnn was a gift to all those who had the privilege to know her. Her smile and laughter will resonate in our minds and help us heal. Her spirit will be felt in all of us for decades to come. Yes, she will be missed, but most importantly, JoAnn will be remembered.
With love,
Lillian Novak
