Joan Strong Obituary

Strong, Joan Elizabeth Petite born in Red Lake, Minnesota on January 29, 1936. Fond du Lac Ojibwe tribal member. Passed away in Minneapolis on May 11, 2006 at the age of 70. Joan is survived by her children, Romilda Rose, Anthony (Marlene), Fabian Jr. (Yvonne), Darwin (Gabrielle), Kevin, Linda (Ron), Colleen, Debra, Annette (Evert), Rae (Carlos) and Marilyn. She had forty grandchildren, twenty nine great- grandchildren, and one great-great- grandchild. Companion to Rufigio Resendez. Special friend of Darwin Hildebrandt. Beloved sister of Judy Bellanger, David Dickenson, Muriel Thompson and Gerald Dickenson. As one of the early co-founders of the American Indian Movement (AIM), Joan remained an active contributor to the American Indian community throughout her life, serving as a board member, employee, volunteer and advisor to many community agencies including, Minneapolis American Indian Center, Little Earth Housing, Indian Health Board, Operation DeNovo, Volunteers of America, Salvation Army and Flandreau Indian School. Joan was a mother of 12 children and adopted mother to many more, opening her home to those in need. She was known for her cooking and "could feed an army singlehandedly". Cherished relative and friend to many. She is preceded in death by her brothers, John and Antoine; son, Gordon; granddaughter, Colleen, sister, Nancy; grandson, Benjamin and mother, Caroline. All night wake service and visitation begins 5 pm Monday, May 15, until the time of funeral, 10 am Wednesday, May 17, All Nations Indian Church, 1515 East 23rd St, Minneapolis. (612) 721-4393. My heartfelt sympathies have gone out to your families after the passing of Joan last May, my dear friend.

Unfortunately I have been hospitalized a lot this past year but am doing fine now. I wish to also convey my condolences on Dave's passing this past week. We will miss them so much and I pray your memories of laughter and love sustain you in the coming days.
