Tortillas, Beans or Kolackies. Family, respect and dignity. Sharing time with everyone or taking a moment to talk/listen to you individually. As the youngest and last of the many foster children, and living in more than a dozen foster homes, Ma Gomez was the only foster mother I called “Ma”. She had that loving caring nature that made me feel comfortable to call her Ma. Growing up, I told many stories of living with the Gomez family, and I always referred to her as “Ma Gomez”.

My favorite memories were realizing she had to have me ‘initiated’ into the Gomez family that first Christmas by having all the kids watch me eat my first tamale – especially the corn husk. You could not be a real Gomez if you couldn’t take a joke. And make sure you did not act like you never ate before – grabbing food from the middle of a bowl was a cardinal sin. I enjoyed my 3+ years with Ma, Salvador, and all the kids and grandchildren; whom I am still friends/family with to this day.

The Gomez family is my biggest family. May God bless the Gomez/Valdez family, take time to remember her life, pass on her legacy, and make her proud as you continue to grow in your lives. Grace and I will miss you.
