Dear Jeff,
There are so many things that I want to tell you. This past month has been so difficult for me. I miss you with all my heart. There are no words to express all the sorrow I am feeling inside. I pray for you and your family as well as all your brothers at the fire departments. Each and everyday I thank God for all the time we spent together the month before you left. I remember all our lengthy conversations on our cell phones, the cubs game, our dinner with your friends, and our long walk to the lake. I spoke with you on your last day, and you were so happy. Little did I know that that was the very last time I would talk to you over the phone. Jeff, I will never forget you. You will always be a part of me wherever I go and whatever I do. You were such an inspiration in my life. And I know that I will see you again one day. We all know that you are now our guardian angel watching over us. Jeff, I know now why I miss you so much.
Love,
Lisa

My Cousin, My Hero.
I'm still struggling to find words that express my sadness. I think about you every day. I think about you every time I see an engine racing off to help a stanger. I think about your fellow firefighters in Stone Park and in Chicago. I think about our families. I think about all of the memories from when we were kids. I trust that you are safe at home with Uncle Chuck and our dear Lord. My comfort comes from the rainbow that I saw at 0700 on April 28, 2004. A true sign of God's promise that we will all surely meet again, a time where our tears and our pain will be forever gone. I Love You Gail

My name is Brian, I am a FF-EMT with the Rutland - Dundee F.P.D. I attended the memorial for jeff and would like to extend my condolences to all of you and your brothers and sisters. I was a wreck after yesterday, it was very disturbing. This was the first FF memorial I had ever been to. But I am here to say that my life has changed forever. I will live each day being more thankful for what I have then in the past. Jeff will remain in my thoughts always. And to your department and the family, hang in there. Things will look up! This is a brother hood and you guys and the family will be in every ones thoughts for ever.

FIREMEN'S PRAYER
When I am called to duty, God,
Whenever Flames may rage,
give me strength to save some life
whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child
before it is too late,
or save an old person
from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
and hear the weakest shout.
to quickly and efficiently
put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
and to give the best in me,
to guard my every neighbor
and protect his property.
And if according to my fate ....
I am to lose my life,
please bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife.

To the Family and Friends of FF/Paramedic Jeffery Berstrom,
Our hearts go out to you all in this time of grief. Your loved one will be remembered always because he was a Hero, all firefighters are Heros. When it comes to firefighting only the special people are choosen. We did not know Jeff but a few friends did and everything we heard was how helpful and how compassionate he was to all he came in contact with. We saw a quote and we feel this fits,"When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure". I hope you all know that Jeff belonged to your family and the brother of so many firefighters. Our sympathy is with your family and all firefighters.

Jeff, You were one of the great ones. Always so quick to smile and crack a joke. Yet filled with such empathy you would ease confidence in your patients by presence alone. Though your death is tragic, it brings us relief to know that you passed doing what you loved so much to do. Jeff, please shine down from heaven and watch our backs, as you did while living. Being an angel allows you to hop a ride on any ole fire truck, please watch over all safety personnel and keep us safe.
RIP Jeff,

THE ROSE BEYOND THE WALL
A rose once grew where all could see, sheltered beside a garden wall, And as the days passed swiftly by it spread its branches straight and tall.
One day a beam of light shone through a crevice that had opened The rose bent gently toward its warmth then passed beyond to the other side..
Now, you who deeply feel its loss, be comforted- the rose blooms there
Its beauty even greater now nurtured by God's own loving care.

Dear Bergstrom Family,
I hope you get the chance to read this, because I too have lost a firefighter in the line of duty. On Thursday, September 6th, 2001, my father, Lt. Robert A. Augustyn of the Cicero Fire Department was crushed by his own fire engine. He was pinned underneath the gas tank and shortly after midnight on Friday, September 7th, 2001, my dad succumed to his injuries. I truely DO know what you are feeling, and what you are going through. Please know, that I have been thinking of all of you since I heard about the accident. Please feel free to contact me at any time. I would love to hear about Your Hero!
May God comfort you during this difficult time.
Please accept my deepest sympathies,
Chris Schuzer
