My condolences to all the members of Jay Levine's family for their loss. As dean he displayed a deep knowledge of the units in his college, yet avoided micro-management. I remember his generous help to me over the years when I was on the UIC faculty.

Jay was one of our "next door" neighbors in Dearborn Park, where he and we moved 30 years ago. I believe I last saw him about 2 or 3 years ago. He always expressed interest in our children. I have learned from reading about him now that his academic specialty is one of my interests and we shared other interests as well. I guess that just shows that sometimes you don't know your own neighbors well enough. He was, however, a very gentle man in the neighborhood. I am sorry that he has passed away.

My deepest sympathy to Julia and the family on your loss. I worked with Jay as his assistant when he was Dean of LAS, and I am grateful that I had many years to support him in his dedication to the college. I will always remember with affection his concern for staff under his leadership. He was a kind man in many quiet ways and I was truly fortunate to have known him.

My condolences to the family. Death is so diffcult no mater what the circumstances are and it is hard to lose a father. May you continue to find hope and comfort through prayer confident that God hears you.

I knew Jay for over forty-five years, from my first semester in graduate school in 1962 when I took a course from him that I still recall as a model to just a few years ago when we would chat in the South Loop. I send my deep sympathy to Julia and the family for their loss.
