To Les, Doug, Kevin, Gina, Rose--My heart goes out to you in your loss of such a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother. I thank you all for welcoming me into your homes this past summer, with Jan and Cindy. We will treasure our memories of that visit, when she was happy and strong. I loved Jan so much. She was so wise, so funny, so smart, so loving, so brave. Some words I found that I hope will bring some comfort:

I GO TO LIFE AND NOT TO DEATH;
FROM DARKNESS TO LIFE'S NATIVE SKY;
I GO FROM SICKNESS AND FROM PAIN
TO HEALTH AND IMMORTALITY.

LET OUR FAREWELL, THEN, BE TEARLESS,
SINCE I BID FAREWELL TO TEARS;
WRITE THIS DAY OF MY DEPARTURE
FESTIVE IN YOUR COMING YEARS.

With love and deepest sympathy,

To Doug(ie) and Kevin, I am so sorry for the loss of your mom. I have such great memories of playing at your house when we were kids - the house with the giant fish tank - and she was always so welcoming and nice to me. She always had a big smile and I remember her as being funny and cheerful. To Les, you, too, were always so warm and I always felt that as a kid, you never talked down to me and always made me feel important. I try to be that same example around my young nieces and nephews. My parents have a great picture of two in their wedding album...you guys were all so young it was hard to imagine you doing grownup things like getting married at that age. I am sorry for this loss and hope that the scriptures can provide you with comfort. My favorite is Psalm 34:4, 18: "I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears...the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." I have only happy memories of you 4 as a family and pray for your peace and strength during this unimaginable time. Love, Julie (Jezuit) Vasilevich

Jan and I were best friends for fourteen years. She will be with me always. I will miss her more than words can describe, but it comforts me to know that she's back in the sunshine again.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Jan in person, although we did exchange a few e-mails, thanks to her dear friend Cindy Ely. I know she fought a long, courageous battle against that awful disease. I think Heaven is a classier place with her there. My family is Irish and William Butler Yeats' words ring especially true today. "Think where man's glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had such friends." Rest well, brave lady. My deepest sympathy to her husband and sons, Cricket, and, of course, Cindy.
