Dear Joe and Family,
Jim was my mentor at World Book in the 1970s, and I had great admiration and affection for him. He taught me loads about writing and editing and a few important things about life along the way. My deepest sympathies are with you all.

Dear family--I worked with Jim Shacter at World Book in the 1970s. He was an amazing copyeditor and I soon discovered that nothing I wrote ever escaped his red marks all over my work. In my mind's eye I still see his neatly scribed "JDS" at the top of my manuscripts.

I was a young punk right out of college when I met your dad/grandpa. I thought I knew a few things about writing. He gently disabused me of that notion. Through the years I have used everything he taught me. (Now, thanks to him, people think I DO know a few things about writing.)

My heartfelt condolences to you on your loss.
