At this two-year anniversary of Jim's death, I continue to grieve. I have his picture posted and keep him in my heart. When we finished our tenure in Rome, and after we were ordained as priests, Jim and I made the trip back to the Midwest together. I was ill, and he took great care of me, something for which I am forever grateful. We enjoyed many re-unions in the ensuing years. To this day, I cannot fathom why Jim was not made a bishop. He had all the right stuff. Fr. Jim Roache - R.I.P.

My name is (Fr) Joe Mattern, and it was my good fortune to have had Jim as a classmate and friend while we were both in theology at the North American College and the Gregorian U. in Rome. It has been one year since Jim's death, and I continue to grieve. I have his portrait throughout our Casa Esther Catholic Worker House here in Omro, WI. I continue to regret that I did not go up to Lake Geneva to spend time with him, playing golf and sharing his wisdom and more - I guess I thought he would live "forever." Indeed, now he does. That does not make my grief any easier. "JIM LIVES!!"

So very sorry to have read late last night of the loss of Father Jim (Chicago Tribune). Such a wonderful person. The world was blessed by his presence, talents, persona, and ethics. We are honored to have known him and Chuck has many fond family memories from childhood on. Sadly, we came across the announcement in the paper by chance -hours after his services occurred. Our condolences at this sad time.

Father Roache,
You always said, Rose Mary you are one of my early birds for Sunday Mass. His homilies where so beautiful. There was one about people as Children it is three pages of how we must keep the little child in us all our life, in order to gain the doors of heaven. Keep your innocence, humility etc. He mailed it to me from Wisconsin wherein he retired. He was a wonderful priest. And I KNOW he went straight to heaven as the young boy, then man and Priest as the gates of heaven opened for him. I cannot be there for his funeral mass but I will in spirit. God Bless Father Roache and may his spirit come down from heaven to grace his loved ones. I think his spirit made me scope the Sun Times obituaries today to find that he has passed this world. Rest in Peace. God Bless the Roache family, and those that Father's heat beat for. Respectfully, Rose Mary Pfeifer

Father Roache and I worked with Cardinal Bernardin for several years. Father Jim was a true churchman, a wise counselor, and a close friend. May he rest in the peace that he learned in a life of service to the Church and broader community.
