Dear Durell and Boys,
I met Jim at DeVry institute in 1958 as students learning electronic design. A few years later Jim joined me in New New York City and we shared an apartment while we worked for TelePrompTer corp. thru company transfers and such I wound up in New Jersey and Jim back in Chicago joining the police dept. What happened from then on was life and raising families.
Jim came from a good family so it's no surprise that your families are close and friendships were important to him.
I will miss Jim please accept my deepest condolences.

Padar Family - Please accept my sympathy on your loss. I met Jim when he was the team of Padar and Shull at Area 4 Homicide and I was an ASA. They were both great detectives in a great Area and always enjoyed working with them. On Being a Cop (both book and blog) brought back many great memories and is re-read on regular basis. "Mike" is just a classic and you can tell so much of what a great person Jim was just from reading that.

My heart and prayers go out to Jim's family at this very difficult time.
Jim was an asset to the police department, and to the OEMC (where I met him). He was always a gentleman, and a professional, he often caught me off guard with his dry wit.
