Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with Jim's family and friends. I am Jim's cousin. His mother, Gerry, was my godmother. His early passing should help us remember to live each day with love and kindness. May our memories of Jim comfort us all as time passes.

My deepest sympathy to all of Jim's family and friends - everyone who is mourning this loss. I am Jim's cousin. His mother Gerry and my father Donald were first cousins. I hadn't seen Jim since we were all teenagers. But I had heard news and seen photos over the years. I am so sorry to hear that he passed away at such a young age and of cancer. I am sending prayers of comfort to all at this painful time.

I remember Jim from boy scouts. We were both in troop 678 at 65th & Hamlin and were in the same patrol - the Rattlesnakes. He was an inspiring guy with a lot of energy and good humor. He passed his enthusiasm for summer camping on to me. I also remember his amazing presence at the West Lawn Park ice skating rink. I am sad to learn of his passing and will keep Jim and his family in my thoughts and prayers. My deepest sympathy to the Augustine family.

To the Family of James Augustine:
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. May the scriptures comfort you and give you hope and strength. Psalm 34:18--"God is near to those that are broken-hearted; and those that are crushed in spirit he saves." You are in my prayers.

Through high school and college, Jim was one of my best and closest friends. While life later took us along diverging paths, I have always valued that friendship and the impact it had on my life. Jim loved his family and they are right to be proud of the person Jim was. No matter how much he achieved in his life, he never lost sight of who he was, who his friends were or how important his family was. I will miss, but never forget Jim
My deepest sympathy to Jim's entire family.

Augustine Family: How shocked I was to hear of Jims passing. I have not seen Jim since high school days when I thought he was the greatest, driving around in that green "bug". I remember his love of hockey and how good he was at it. I dont know how old his children are but do know what a great man your father was and I am sure if anything, he only became a more caring individual as he grew older. You have a very special angel to watch over you. When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. Treasure those thoughts of your son/brother/father, as I am sure he is looking down treasuring thoughts of you! May Jim rest in peace!

To the Augustine Family - Our sincere condolences from the Clarke Family. Jim was one of the first American hockey players I met at ND...and his toughness impressed me (scared me a little too!) But I soon learned under this very gruff exterior was a caring and wonderful guy. At all hockey reunions, my wife and I always looked forward to seeing him. Like Jim, she was a Chicagian, and she truly appreaciated what he represented..."a true south sider and hockey player". May he rest in peace. Danielle & Paul Clarke

Jim was one of my best friends through our high school years and into college. We met while caddying at Beverly Country Club 1969 and into the 70's. Lots of golf including brother Joey especially Monday's at Beverly, other days at Evergreen and mostly at Gleneagles. The high school dances and trips to ND. When you talk about fond memories of growing up, mine include Jim Augustine. I reconnected with Jim a couple of years ago and got the opportunity to tee it up again with him one more time. A blessing I will always be grateful for. What a great guy. I will miss him now. My condolences to his family.

My sincere sympathy to the entire Augustine family - Ernie, Jeff, Martha, Michael and Julie. I can only think back to the wonderful times we all spent together growing up: The boys eating cereal out of my Mom's mixing bowls, giving Jim backrubs on the living room floor @ Maplewood, and taking out his chin stitches from hockey injury. Will also miss the phone chats...Will miss you as you start a new life in heaven. Barbara Pieczyrak (Las Vegas, NV)

To Augie's Family: Losing Jim at such a young age and through the circumstances you and he endured is pure tragedy. I knew him from our 2 seasons together on the Notre Dame Ice Hockey team. All hustle and toughness wrapped in a gentle demeanor. A role model for kids. He must have turned into a marvelous coach and advocate for hockey. Me and all his ND hockey buds bid him a fond goodbye. We'll see him on the other side. May God's peace be with you all.

Augie, may be the Lord embrace you. I will remember you as an ND hockey teammate and fellow Cavanaugh Hall resident who had a heart of gold beneath the southside exterior. A great guy who will be missed. Dave Caron (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)

Jim was a great teammate the 4 years we played together at Notre Dame. He never forgot his roots. He fought the good fight. Not sure I met anyone tougher. I recall one game Jim came to the bench with 3 teeth knocked out and he was back in for his next shift. Last saw him when we played golf at the Notre Dame golf course with his son Jeff in June 2008. Take care my friend.

Jeff, Martha and Michael,
My mind wanders into such fond memories of your Dad as I sit trying to think of something to say to you. I can hear his laugh and see his smile. These memories may escape you right now but in time you will reconnect with them. Know that there are so many people who love each of you and, in the dark hours, know you are never alone. I send love.
Your Canton neighbor,
Lori
