Jacqueline Burgess Obituary

Jacqueline Witmer Burgess
Raleigh
Jacqueline Witmer Burgess, age 87, passed away peacefully on Nov. 13, 2012 surrounded by family. She was born in Greensboro, NC to the late Samuel Bard and Ida Brooks Witmer. She grew up among her father's family in Lancaster, PA. After her family's move to Cary, NC she graduated from Cary High School. Her family then moved to Raleigh, where she attended Meredith College and NC State.
She married Cale Burgess, Jr. in 1949 and began her legacy as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and recently, great-grandmother. She will be remembered as a devoted member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church. There she was a life member of the UMW, part of a special group of women in Circle #7, Altar Guild, and Receptionist Volunteer. She was a long time teacher of the 2 year old Sunday School Class and was well known for her "Animal Crackers." There was a decoration for every holiday, festive family dinners, and she loved the NCSU Wolfpack. The latter was the cause of many hours on the "edge of her seat."
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Cale; daughters Cheryl Hall and husband Charles, Meg Byron and special friend Duke Underwood, Jackie McLaurin and husband Keith, Betsy Way and husband Thomas, Harriet Banner and special friend Bill Stewart, and Susan Burgess and special friend Maureen O'Meara; grandchildren, Majors Curt and Michelle Byron, Laura and Danny Hunt, Keith and Andy McLaurin, Taylor and Katy Way; great grandchildren, Emerson and Camryn Hunt, and Michael Byron; sisters Rose Marie Stroup and Laverne Pendergrass and many nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law, Bob and wife, Martha Burgess, Bill and wife, Ann Burgess.
She is predeceased by her parents, son, Cale K. Burgess, III; son-in –law, Metts Banner; and sister-in-law, Edith Burgess Futrell.
Thank you to the caring staff at BRHCC and Heartland Hospice, especially Yolanda.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 17th at 11am at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church. The family will receive friend at the church prior to the service from 9:30am until 11:00 am. Interment will follow the service at Montlawn Memorial Park
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Rd, Raleigh, NC 27608.

Cheryl, To you and all your sisters, as well as your dad, I am sad about your mom. I remember so well the days when you babysat Kelley and Kevin and we all lived right around the corner from each other. Looking back, it seems the years have flown by. Kelley reminded me that she and Harriett were the same age, and remarked how much she liked her.

I will be thinking of you all in the months ahead, as I know they will be ones of adjustment.

My best to all.
