J. Stern Obituary

Stern, J. Allyson

J. Allyson Stern, age 84, of Wilmette, IL. Beloved husband of Carol Simpson Stern, father of Jeff McDonald (Maria Kjellberg), brother of Bernard (Audrey) and brother-in-law of Barbara Flynn Waller (Stan) and the late Rupert Simpson (Laura Wenke). Others mourning his loss include nieces Mary Kathleen Flynn, Krista Flynn Burgeson (Brian) and Kristie Stein (Curt), and nephews, grandchildren, grandnieces and grandnephews. J. was born on June 14, 1938, in New York City to parents Esther (nee Reichek) and Max Stern. The family later moved to Chicago. J. had a larger-than-life personality and a fierce intellect. He attended the University of Chicago's Committee on Social Thought graduate program. It was at the U of C that he met his beloved wife Carol, whom he married in 1963 (after his first marriage ended in divorce). It was also at the U of C that J. met author Saul Bellow, who used J. as the basis of the character of Lionel Pfeffer in his novel, Mr. Sammler's Planet. On the professional front, in the 1960s, J. owned Toad Hall, a popular "hi-fi" store in Hyde Park, on Chicago Avenue, on Ontario Street, and in Wilmette's Plaza Del Lago. Throughout much of his career, J. was a private wealth manager and investor. Along with his wife Carol, J. was an avid collector and dealer of 20th century art, specializing in the works of well-known artists such as Alexander Calder, Victor Vasarely and Joan Miró, and also in Chicago favorites, especially Gertrude Abercrombie and Rainey Bennett. J. and Carol's love story was one for the ages. They were truly devoted to each other, and he was a big champion of her career as a Professor in the Department of Performance Studies in the School of Communication at Northwestern University. J. was very proud of Carol's many professional accomplishments, which included serving as the Chairperson of her department, Dean of the Graduate School, and president of the American Association of University Professors. After Carol's retirement in 2018, J. and Carol were inseparable. As his health declined over the last few years and months, his stoicism was remarkable. J. leaves behind many friends and family members who loved him dearly and appreciated his clever wit, undying loyalty, and amazing resilience. A memorial service will be held in the future. I did not know J. Stern, but was a friend of Carol Simpson Stern in high school and for a few years following (50s-60s). I remember when she met him and how happy she was. Real real love! It is clear from this obit that the devotion remained. I do want to offer my condolences to Carol -- and certainly the family. This is sad...I hope the years together will be somewhat comforting. No platitudes--just know that an old friend (Wendy Grampp) remembers you well.

When I was in graduate school in the early 90s, at NU with J´s wife Carol, J would pop up at various events and conferences and always add some levity, if not hilarity. He was a wonderfully irreverent non-conformist who insisted on injecting both humor and fun into almost any situation. J didn´t care what was politically correct if he had the chance to poke fun at the officious and humorless among us. If he noticed one of us taking ourselves too seriously, he´d stir up the pot with a gag and/or faux outrage. I got a giant kick out of him because his humor was an outsized version of my own! He WAS completely devoted to his wife, Carol, which usually gave us the context for his joy: he loved his wife like crazy and joy was a bi-product of that! J was, indeed, a bigger-than-life character, but I don´t think I ever knew about his being the model for a character in a Saul Bellow novel! I must go find that book...In the meantime, I want to extend my deepest condolences to Carol, the Stern & Simpson families, and all who loved him. Though his penchant for a quip or a razzing was inevitable, J. was also a very kind & dear guy, too, when he let you see that side of him. I feel privileged to have gotten to know him for a too brief time in the 90s, and to have shared some of that joy of living with him on that carnival ride called grad school. He definitely helped me keep my sanity when he was around to share some fun. May love and light surround you, J. and May comfort and solace and peace surround you, Carol, as you negotiate the difficult transition on this side of the veil. You´re in my heart, with thoughts and prayers, Carol. xo, Kathy
