Horace Hallums Obituary

Hallums, Horace M. "Munson" Age 94, passed suddenly Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, with his family by his side. He was born November, 22 1921 in Pleasant View, Tennessee. He lived in Chicago and surrounding suburbs, moving to Joliet in 2005. Played football for Middle Tennessee State University, in 1941 he was a Golden Glove champion, and was a Master Chess Player. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 until he was discharged in 1945. While on leave, he met Bessie Kishbaugh at the Walgreens on State and Randolph in Chicago in 1943, he bought her a coke and on May 12, 1945 they were married. He worked as a carpenter, sold Insurance for Metropolitan Life and Monumental. He loved to travel and especially enjoyed his Honor flight to Washington D.C. His favorite hobby was making clock hats. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and his beloved wife of 60 years, Bess (nee Kishbaugh) in 2006. Munson is survived by his daughters, Jan (Tom) Quillman, Louise (Rick) West and Christine DeGra; son, H. Munson Hallums Jr.; former son-in-law, Steve DeGraw; two grandchildren, Katie and Steve DeGraw; numerous nieces and nephews. Munson is remembered as an avid joker and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a diehard Cubs fan but would watch any Chicago team. He was a member of the Masons for 70 years and became a Master in 1963. He was also a member of American Legion Post 1080. The family would like to extend thanks to the Joliet Fire Department and the Emergency Room Staff at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for their compassionate care. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Craig Herr officiating. Interment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers. please make a donation to Honor Flight Chicago or a charity of your choice.
