My dad (Rollo Allen) has told me many stories about the flying days and so many of them included Herbert Schaaf. I can still hear the way the name Schaaf rolled from his lips. Those were the great fliers. Now today and everyday when the planes fly overhead I know that those great fliers are together on some grand mission. And I believe that sometimes when the planes go by it is our flier thats hopped aboard to blink the lights to remind us that they are still watching over us.

Herb was a fun one to chat with and always enjoyed challenging conversation. I enjoyed the time he spent with our family. He was always interested in my career and asked a lot of questions. He enjoyed laughter and always had a good story. I honor the time he spent in the armed forces. He loved his great grandchildren and supported their higher education goals. However, he was a cut throat skip-bo player who wouldn't throw a game for anyone- great-grands included!

I will always have fond momories of you from being a child fishing in the lake to having you give me a way at my wedding! I remember you cried so hard standing up there while i was getting married. I will never forget the war stories, and i cook on the grill all the time. I will miss you grandpa!!! Love Ella

Col. Schaaf did a lot for Georgia Southern, the alma mater and later employer of his late wife. He contributed numerous historical videos to the Library, and also the Preetorius Family Papers to Special Collections, a large group of papers, some going back to the 18th century, originally collected by his wife and her mother, Flo Preetorius. He was a member of the 1906 Society and attended many social functions here as well as in town.
