Henry Hyde Obituary

Hyde Jr., Henry John "Hank" 55, of Elk Grove Village, died on December 24, 2005, following a lengthy illness. Born January 18, 1950, the first born child of Henry J. Hyde and the late Jeanne Simpson-Hyde, "Hank", as he was affectionally known to family and friends, grew up in Chicago's far northwest side neighborhoods of Sauganash and Edgebrook. He was a graduate of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic School and later Loyola Academy in Wilmette. At Loyola, Hyde was a standout athlete, starring on both baseball and basketball. In 2003, he was inducted into Loyola Academy's Athletic Hall of Fame. Following his first year in college at Loyola University of New Orleans in 1969, Hyde was drafted and signed by Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates and assigned to the Niagra Falls Pirates of the minor league New York-Penn League. An outstanding pitcher, Hyde possessed a low 90's fastball and a knee-buckling curve to go along with a baffling knuckleball. The following season, he was sent to pitch fro the Salem Rebels, Pittsburgh's Class A affiliate in the Carolina League, where he played alongside future Major League players, Art Howe, Kent Tekulve, Frank Taveras and future Pirates All-Star, Dave Parker. In 1973, Hyde was signed by the Atlanta Braves as a free agent and assigned to pitch for the Greenwood (SC) Braves of the South Atlantic League, where he spent parts of two seasons before suffering a career-ending arm injury. Hyde then returned to his native Chicago where he volunteered for many years as a youth basketball, baseball and football coach. At the time of his death, Hyde also served as a revenue agent with the Office of Ilinois Secretary of State. He is also survived by two children, Veronica, 20 and Daniel, 18 and his former wife, Gina. He is also survived by his father, U.S. Representative, Henry J. Hyde of Wood Dale, a sister, Laura of Chicago and two brothers, Robert of Irving, Texas and Anthony of Elk Grove Village, IL. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2005m from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Geils Funeral Home, 260 W. Irving Park Rd., Wood Dale, IL. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:30 p.m., December 28, 2005, at St. Julian Eymard Roman Catholic Church, 601 Biesterfield Rd., Elk Grove Village, IL. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the DuPage Convalescent Center Foundation, 400 N. County Farm Rd., Wheaton, IL. 60187, (630) 784-4246. Arrangements by Geils Funeral Home, 630-766-3232

Chairman Hyde and Family ~ I am very sorry about Hank's passing. I read the article in the paper and was so shocked to hear how ill he had been. I worked with Hank back in the days of Elmhurst National Bank! I sat next to him and enjoyed listening to his baseball days along with how proud he was to be a father. He was such a kind man.

Losing a loved one at any age is not easy...but know that what you and I hope to achieve one day, Hank now knows face to face. His suffering is no more.

I pray that your tears of sadness will one day be replaced with tears of joy.

God bless you all....to Hank's children: Nothing can replace your dad, keep his memory alive always in your heart and he will never be gone. I am so sorry for the two of you.

HENRY, To you and your family my heartful sympathy. I recall your great joy and that of Jean at the time of his birth in 1950. It was a time of great expectation in the future as we moved on from the days of law school. This is sad time but take some consolation in knowing that your son had the great satisfction of always being proud of his father.

With my deepest sympathy.

I was privileged to know Hank for over 10 years. I learned that his children were his life, and his life was his family and friends. He was a son any father would be proud of, a father any child would admire, and certainly a friend that one only rarely encounters in life. I appreciated his lesson about how to live life, accepting its difficulties under his terms, always maintaining a determined positive attitude. Please know that Hank has touched many people, and in so doing, has left many of us with countless wonderful memories.

Tony, I cried this morning when I read about Hank's passing. He was one of my favorite patients by far and he always came in with a smile on his face no matter how he was feeling. I will miss his stories and laugh. Please know Tony that my thoughts and prayers are will you and your family at this time. I cannot attend the service because I will be working. Take care. I will miss seeing you too.
