Helen J. "GiGi" Gorman

Helen Gorman Obituary

Gorman, Helen J. "GiGi" (82, claimed to be 76), passed away July 14, 2002, in her home of natural causes. GiGi would have been happy to know that her death certificate will show her age as 76 ad not the dreaded 82. That's because she somehow convinced the Secretary of State to issue her a drivers license with the false birthday and that was the official record used by the coroners office for identifying her age. GiGi was a long time south sider until she moved to the north side in the early 1980's to be where "things were happening". She was a world traveler and collector of Asian art and artifacts, some dating back to the Ming Dynasty (at least that is what she told everyone). Before retiring in 1989 GiGi had a successful career in sales and sales training at R.H. Donnelley but her career was not as successful as she wanted and she blamed that on sex discrimination. She didn't like the fact that year after year she trained young men who would then become her boss on their way up the corporate ladder. She had hit the glass ceiling and before retiring she decided to shatter it, or at least put a crack in it. She sued the company for sex and age discrimination and retired with a nice settlement. It wasn't until the drafting of the settlement papers that she confided that she lied to the company about her age. She had to though, she still had the job description for her initial job at the company and is said under qualification "must be under 40", she wasn't so she lied. Almost every afternoon you could find GiGi lunching at one of her two favorite hang-outs, O'Brian's Restaurant on Wells Street or Calo's on N. Clark Street. GiGi was a known eccentric who provided great entertainment, both intentionally by and inadvertently to all she came in contact with and she will be missed by her three children, Bob (Margaret), Greg (Marzena) and Candace (Chris) and her six grandchildren, Kevin, Colleen, Corey, Maura, Devin and Aleksandra. Visitation is Wednesday, from 3 to 9 p.m. at Cooney Funeral Home and a memorial celebration will be held at O'Brien's on Thursday, at 4 p.m. For further information contact Bob Gorman at 708-799-3377 or Candace Gorman at 773-784-6486. HI Gormans,

I worked with you'r mother at RHD. She would have loved the Obit--knowing her it sounds like she could have written it. She was the First boss I had in Area 5.and there was never a dull moment when Helen was around. You must have wonderful memories of her-you are blessed

I'm sorry to read of your loss. Your mom's obituary was the most genuine and heartfelt I ever read and I shared it with many friends. I'm sorry I did not have the opportunity know your mother, she seems to have enjoyed life. I'm sure she is smiling.

I didn't know your mom but I now know that I wish I had. Your obituary/tribute to her was very heartfelt and was truly a testament to how loved she must have been. I cut it out of the paper yesterday and I read it to my mom and my grandma (who is Gigi's age--that's why your mom's obit caught my eye in the first place). Deepest sympathies on your loss, I know you loved her and she will be missed. How lovely that so many other people will now remember her too, thanks to your loving tribute.

I am merely a reader of the Chicago Tribune, but had to comment on your very original obit for your mom. At first, I didn't know how to take it, but upon a second reading, I realize that she was a very loved lady. She would have probably loved her obituary! I just lost my mom, too, in May, and as saddened as I am, your description of your own mom brought a smile to my face. You have my deepest sympathies. I'm sure fond memories will be with you always.

Dearest Gormans et.al.

I have had the good luck to at least have met the majority of you, and even spent time with your mother on various occasions. The obit somehow manages to capture the essense of all. My deepest sympathies for her loss. She lives on in each of you.

My dad (with whom I work) just passed me your mom's obit in the Trib. She sounds like a wonderful soul who will be missed. You did her proud with this obit. I didn't know her, but wish I had. From what you wrote, we don't have enough GiGis these days. Thanks for sharing her with all of us.

Dearest Greg, Bobby, and Candace,

Sue Vittorio just called me and I read the obit on the Internet. It was absolutely fabulous! You know how very much I loved GiGi. I feel honored to have been one of her daughters-in-law.

Thom Blondell called me sometime ago and told me to buy a copy of that day's Sun Times, and there she was in an ad for O'Brian's! What a woman. We're all lucky she touched our lives. Please accept my condolences and know that you're in my thoughts.

To the Gorman Family:

What a great mom you had. I don't know her and I don't know any of you, but I do know that she was a very special lady.

My prayers are with you and your family. However, if you are anything like your mom, I'm sure you will all go on in the spirit that she intended for her loved ones. How lucky you all were.
