Harvey Freed Obituary

Freed, M.D., Harvey M. Was born in Chicago June 26,1935, to Rose Chapman and Phillip Freed. He was brother to Myrna Skilling. He grew up in Rogers Park and attended Evanston Township High School and the University of Michigan. He completed his medical degree at the University of Illinois and his psychiatric residency at Michael Reese Hospital under Roy Grinker, M.D., interrupted when he was drafted into the army and spent 2 years in Panama. Then, after completing his residency, he studied community psychiatry with Gerald Caplan in Boston. He received a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to implement a program on Chicago's West Side. He later moved to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was Chief of Inpatient Psychiatric Services.Later, at Northwestern, he became an esteemed supervisor exposing psychiatric residents to "talk" therapy instead of "meds only." Harvey began a private practice after returning from Boston and continued seeing patients until his retirement in January 2018. He and Marjorie were founders of two Chicago non-profits: Intuit: the Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art and The Village Chicago, a membership organization devoted to expanding the experiences of older adults through programs and access to a variety of health-related services. In earlier days, they travelled to less explored rural sites in the U.S. and exotic destinations abroad. He died March 4, 2019, of heart failure and prostate cancer. He is survived by his wife; his sons, Ian and Daniel; daughters-in-law, Genevieve Gormley and Valeria Biagosch; and three grandchildren, Owen, Henry, and Simona. A celebration of Harvey's life was held earlier.

Dr Freed was my psychiatrist in my early twenties around 2013. He truly saved and changed my life. I think of him often. I almost wish I had a voicemail from him or something but I know he would find that silly. I drove by intuit this week and thought of him. Condolences to his family, he was a special person.

Every time I watch the Cubs I think of Harvey, who gave me the gift of appreciation for them, at a time when I could appreciate almost nothing of being alive. Thank you Harvey. I always love and remember you. Allen

Harvey and I would talk politics some days, and he would tell me what was what, and as a last retort I would say I'll call Norman Finkelstein right now! and we'd have a laugh. I really miss Harvey.

Dr. freed was my psychiatrist for nearly 15 years. He really helped me make the transition to adulthood and to living a rich life. We was incredibly warm, empathic and funny, and while I was still smoking his borkum riff tobacco smelled the best.

I'm sad to learn that he's gone.

Sincerely,
Chris Segal

I knew Harvey at ISPI and later worked for him at the Pilsen Mental Health Center. Many years later I also worked at Northwestern, but in outpatient psyc. and did not see him there. Harvey was a joy to know and I'd like to extend my condolences to his wife and children.

Bob and I are happy to remember Harvey Freed and the many years we spent working together at the NMH Institute of Psychiatry. He was a wonderful boss, so smart, so compassionate and so funny! We will always miss him and miss our relationship. Marjorie - please accept our condolences. It was such a pleasure to be connected to both of you.

Dear Marjorie,
Emily and I are so sad to learn of Harvey's passing. He has been a presence in our lives since the 1970s when we worked with him caring for patients at the, then, Institute of Psychiatry. His warmth, humor and wisdom created a caring and healing culture that helped innumerable patients and deepened the skills of many, many clinicians.

Please accept our condolences for your great loss.
