Dear Shirlee and Aaron,
Sandy and I send our love and condolences on your loss. Harold was an exemplary person. As so many of his residents and colleagues noted, he was a role model for me (Fred) in practice. We will never forget his compassion, his dedication and his devotion to healing, helping, learning, teaching and love of medicine and his fellow human beings or his devotion to Judaism and family. He was the ideal model of what a man should be.

It must be sixty years since I last saw Harold, but his impression on others was lasting. I remember him well as a quiet , calming and positive influence on a group of boys who were learning to become leaders at Neighborhood Boys Club. Those who've been close to Harold over the years must feel fortunate, indeed.

There were 4 of us in High School-Harold,Bob Holm,Don Wilhelm and Jack Leske. We palled around and did all sort of sport things. One thing I bet Harold never told you was about the night he and I saw a Flying Saucer. It was July 4, probably 1946,or 47 or 48 whenwe saw this thing flying eastward over the city. A few days later the papers were full of people reporting the same thing we had seen. Up until that time people were not even aware of such a thing.
Another memory was of the day I stood outside Harold's bedroom window which faced Belle Plaine Ave only to have him tell me that his father had just died and he could not come out. Wow! Up to that time I never had heard of someone dying.
Harold was an elcellent athelete and I will always remember his swiftness playing touch football at Bateman School with our group.
He was an usher at our wedding on 9/2/50. See what you can learn from an old geezer like me.Jack Leske / Park Ridge

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Shafter at a number of functions held by the Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club, where he was a member in the 1940's. He made a great impression on the medical world and will be missed.
