Harold Moe Obituary

Moe, Harold J.

Harold J. Moe, 91, of Worth, entered eternal life on August 21, 2024. Beloved husband of Margaret (nee Huber), to whom he was married for 55 years. Loving father of Carol Moe, Timothy Moe and Dorothy (Greg Voss). Cherished grandfather of Megan Voss and Juan and Daniel Moe. Dear brother of the late Lenore (the late George) Fleming, and Lois Jane Simon (the late Clarence). Uncle to the late Susan Schepp, Nancy Sharkey, Dennis Simon, Karen Nicols, Jeffrey Foss and Jennifer Freeman. A graduate of both Loyola University and Vanderbilt, Harold was a long-time health physicist at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, where he worked on calculations for radiation shielding, and was instrumental in the development of shielding for the laboratory's Advanced Photon Source. He was a member of the National Physics Society for 50 years and wrote the book "Operational Health Physics Training" in 1988, which is in use today and has been translated into multiple languages. Harold was a member of the Worth Lions Club for more than 40 years and became close friends with Ray (the late Donna) Galuszka, his "golfing buddy," and Bill Kordt. Harold was a lector at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palos Hills for more than 30 years and tutored students at St. Benedict in Blue Island for five years. He enjoyed bowling and ballroom dancing, musicals and music; he played guitar for many years. An avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Bears and Bulls, he also golfed into his late 80s. Family and friends to gather for a visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 8245 W. 111th St, Palos Hills, with Mass to follow at 11 a.m., and internment at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery in Alsip. Services entrusted Schmaedeke Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago orthe Alzheimer's Association would be appreciated. Harold's dry sense of humor will be missed; he might consider his life lived as "adequate," and his many profound sayings about life will be long remembered, such as, "Tomorrow is another day."

I recall Harold as a good and fair man. I was inspired by his depth of intellect. I still have a certificate signed by him on my wall to this day from Health Physics training I received from him. I was an inexperienced 20 year old technician at Argonne National Laboratory in 1975. From 1975 until I left Argonne in 1996, we shared a career within the Environment, Safety and Health Division at the Lab. I am blessed to have known him and glory to God for his life, his family and his contributions to this world.
